TOP PICKS OF EMERGING DESIGNERS AND WHO TO LOOK FOR.

By  |

As the years go on and styles change, its a stressful job and extremely pressuring for designers to not only stay current but also to create and offer the world with visionary pieces. We will always have the name and design houses such as Chanel, Dior, Oscar de la Renta, and Dolce & Gabbana ringing in our ears and hearts but there will always be newcomers that are bucking to make a name for themselves. The designers below are just a few that I have seen and loved. They have also been recognized by the Council of Fashion Designers of American (CFDA) as outstanding designers and people to keep your eye on.

Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne

PUBLIC SCHOOL

Designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxmell Osbourne, born and raised in New York City have done an outstanding job at taking individuals not familiar to the NYC lifestyle and street style to their home town and aesthetic. Their label, PUBLIC SCHOOL is a great representation of the high energy and restless appeal of men along with women’s wear. With 100% of their production done from the the hands of individuals within the New York area, its easy for these two designers to stay grounded to their authentic style. Chow and Osborne’s depiction of a prep school attire mixed with that rugged street edge makes it easy for the wearer to feel quite comfortable in their garments. With their consistent black, white and gray color palette, their collection is very minimalistic yet still sticking to that strong New York edge and confidence. My most favorite concept of their collections is their attention to layers and garment levels. With most looks being composed of up to 3-4 pieces, the gradiation of  fabric and garment levels from head to toe makes every look seem effortless and extremely uniformed. Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne have done an amazing job since 2008 to transform the ideal ‘public school’ style and made turned it into a street chic acceptable look than can be worn by many! They can be seen on the list of Nominees and Honorees for this year’s Swarovoski Award for Womenswear by the CFDA.

PUBLIC SCHOOL can be purchased as specialty boutiques and department stores including Barney’s New York, Harvey Nichols, Isetan, Odin, Maxfield, and Louis Boston.

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen established their brand, The Row in 2006. Originally created in Los Angeles, the two took its name and found its place in New York City. Similar to Public School, the collection, besides their handbags are completely produced here within the boarders of America. The twins wanted to create collections that would be wonderful wardrobe builders consisting of beautiful basics with a high level of chicness and elegance. This was done with such ease. The Row houses some of the most gorgeous pieces that that are constructed out of the most pristine fabrics. With silks that you can almost hear wisp down the runways, knits and cashmeres that you don’t need to touch to know their softness. The Olsen girls have not only paid close attention to fabric selections but also to construction and craftsmanship. Their jackets and over coats are tailored to perfection to suit the feminine body in such a way that they can make any woman feel beautiful and posh.  Similar to the designers, their collections are soft with a small amount of mystery and poise. It could be the flow of the fabric that leaves you breathless and in awe but I personally believe that its the cleanliness of each piece that makes you want to own and cherish each garment that is produced and sent down the runway. The Row offers everything that your modern day woman would want. It has comfort, style, ease and seduction. If you’re looking for gorgeous breathtaking basics, The Row is the design house to check out. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen can be seen as well on the list of nominees and honorees at this year’s CFDA Awards for Womenswear Designer of the Year. Thom Browne

Thom Browne New York

Thom Browne began his established journey in 2001 when his first doors were opened in the fall of that year. During these times, he was known for his impeccably tailored men’s clothing all of which were hand done. As the years went on, he branched out, creating a ready-to-wear collection for the  Spring/Summer of 2004, and then to launch a women’s collection in 2011. What excites me the most is his new bold designs that are eye popping and completely revolutionary. If you have ever witnessed a Thom Browne runway show, you will never forget it or think about suiting the same way again. The way that he exaggerates the structure of the suit itself and plays with the build of the human form is absolutely mind blowing! With each piece being so structured and the attention to detail from the piping along the edges of his jackets to the masks and cartoon like accessories that he puts on his models that he sends down the runway, you would think that you have fallen down the rabbit hole and have just entered into Wonderland.

His ready-to-wear is nothing but the essence of a British gentleman/woman. European tailored suiting that fits the body as if he was back to his ‘by appointment-only’ days from the start of his career. Thom Browne has made on lookers think again when it comes to your modern day suiting, to the extent that the classic Brooks Brothers have made a place for Browne to design a capsule of men and women’s apparel for their creative concept laboratory. Browne hits all levels of a designer from haute couture extravagance to dapper suiting. Definitely one to check out and buy a ticket into a new world of fashion.

Thom Browne can be see on the list of nominees and honorees of this year’s CFDA Awards for Menswear Designer of the Year.

Ryan Roche originated as a kid designer but as friends insisted on wanting pieces in their own sizes, she made her break into women’s ready-to-wear getting her first collection bought by Jovovich in the fall of 2011. Roche’s collections are the epitome of her hometown style. Coming from Idaho before her big move to New York in 2004, her collections shows reflections of the Idaho skies with beautiful hues of wild blue and soft pinks. Her sweaters and knit wear consist of pieces that every women would love to curl into and never emerge again. From light weight shawls and fly away cardigans to chunky sweaters and ponchos, Roche has managed to sum up the mature women to perfection. With simple neutral palettes with pops of vibrant colors, her collections are soft and delicate. She has fun with knit textures and layering pieces that are perfect for the fall/winter seasons. Roche even has lovely knit dresses that hugs the figure and is flattering to almost any body type. As a mother herself, you can tell that Roche was thinking that there should still be fashion and style intertwined with comfort and accessibility. Her lightweight knits are perfect for the woman in every state to enjoy and feel beautiful without worrying about being restricted and tied down by stiff fabric, twists and ties. The comfy chic style of Roche’s ready-to-wear is taking the world by storm and making you want to see the country side while wrapped in one of her cozy cardigans with a mug of tea and a good book under the starry night sky. Ryan Roche is also on the list of nominees and honorees at this year’s CFDA Awards for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear

Ever since I was a young boy, I had a love for clothing. I remember walking through various stores just feeling the fabrics and turning the garments inside out just to look at the construction of each piece. I knew that the fashion industry was a creative realm that I had to be part of. With that in mind I made my way through college and graduated with my Bachelors Degree in Product Development with an initial emphasis in Fashion Design. I've completed the trek from the Midwest all the way to the Golden State of California to take my place in the fashion world and take a stand for self expression and creativity. What excites me the most about fashion is the opportunity to completely morph yourself into different styles daily! The chance to try new things and set yourself apart from your neighbor. Its a glamorous and fascinating world. Through my written word, I hope to express my passion and the love I have deep down for fashion world. I also want be that helping hand for all of those that know they have it in them to be trendy and chic but may not know just exactly what to put together, from the items within their closet to execute successful daily looks. I hope that my words are helpful, encouraging and most importantly, helps to build confidence within each reader!
