THINX, Change Your Underwear, Change The World, – Literally!
It was super exciting to interview Miki Agrawal, author of the #1 Best Seller, Do Cool Sh*t, about her newest launch/venture- THINX. Her book highlighted her journey, becoming an entrepreneur, while giving advice and details on how to make it happen! Her book also talks about her first venture starting a pizza restaurant called WILD serving organic, gluten free, and dairy free pizza options. It also references other ideas she wanted to cultivate. It mentioned that Miki and her twin sister, Radha came up with the idea for THINX. The idea was born in 2005 during their family games – Agrapalooza – Radha got her flow in the middle of their 3 legged race. She went to wash her bathing suit bottom and through the frustration they both thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if we had a pair of underwear that was period proof?”
It was then their idea was born.
Once they began the process to make this a reality, it took about three and a half years to make THINX. Through trial and error, and making sure all of the standards they set were met, the innovative undies were created.
Q. How does this product work?
A. We wanted to come up with something leak proof and stain resistant, so we combined four different technologies (anti-microbial, moisture-wicking, breathable leak-proof, and absorbent) that work together to be totally period-proof.The absorbency layer and leak-resistant tech make sure nothing comes through the underwear if you have an accident, yet you feel clean and dry the whole time you are wearing them thanks to the anti-microbial and moisture-wicking layers. It’s like magic! Science-y, tech-y magic.
Q.What were the most difficult obstacles with creating this product?
A. One of the most difficult parts of developing THINX technology was definitely theintense trial-and-error process with all the different layers. After a couple of years, we finally put together a pair of underwear that we thought would do the trick, but then, when we threw them in the dryer, one layer shrunk at a different level than another layer, which made the garment buckle. We had to start all over with entirely new fabrics. Plus, it all has to work in the most sensitive area of a woman’s body, and it had to be comfortable but still fashionable!
Q. How long can you wear THINX?
A. Every pair of THINX has a top layer that wicks all liquid into the über thin absorption layer right beneath it, so that you feel super dry. This way, you can wear ’em all day long (i.e., no, you don’t have to change them during the day, no, they don’t feel like diapers, and no, it’s not like sitting in your own blood)!
Q. How is it used for someone who is unsure whether or not their flow may be too heavy for it?
A. I recommend that on the first two days, (which are normally the heaviest days) that they use tampons or a menstrual cup if they are unfamiliar. Some opt to use it as a replacement on lighter days. That is why we came up with the hash tag #knowyourflow. It’s important one knows what their cycle is like so they select the product that is best fit for them. Q. I read that there is a philanthropy component to THINX. Can you tell me a little more about it?
A. After we found out that millions of girls in the developing world were falling behind in school just because of their periods, we knew we could use our idea to support them somehow. So, we did a lot of research on a number of organizations to find the right partner, and fell in love with AFRIpads’ model, which really empowers local women and girls in a big way. I visited Uganda earlier this year and talked to some of those women who either sew, sell, or use the menstrual kits that we fund, and it’s no exaggeration when they tell us that their lives have changed. The rate of attendance in school just skyrockets when they have access to the materials they need, and the women that AFRIpads employs now have truly sustainable careers. Q. What is the message behind THINX ?
A. We are using innovation to change the culture, and the conversation, around menstruation. Women find it uncomfortable to talk about it; it’s a huge taboo – and THINX is committed to breaking it. We want people to come in contact with our brand and immediately know that it’s okay to be open and inquisitive, and to challenge the norms surrounding our periods. I think we’re really doing it, too; we’ve never seen more women openly discuss their hygiene regimens than now, on our own social media accounts, articles, and advertisements. It’s really powerful, and so motivating to see.
