6 Household Chores You Might Be Doing Wrong

By  |

There’s never a shortage of household chores, but you may be surprised by how quickly and easily some of them can be performed. You may also be surprised to learn that you may be doing them wrong. Use these tips and tricks to make sure your house is as clean as possible.

Washing Clothes

You may have a tendency to throw your entire laundry bag into the washing machine and toss in a cap of detergent. However, overloading the machine could end up costing you time, and too much detergent can lead to greasy clothes. Washing machines have various load capacities, so check how much laundry yours can hold. Your clothes need enough space to move around during the washing, soaking, and rinsing cycles. Use the proper amount of detergent for your load as determined by the instructions on the bottle.

Dusting

Fighting dust seems like a never-ending battle, but you can win each one quickly and easily. When cleaning your ceiling fan and lamp shades, leave the feather duster in the cabinet. Instead, use a pillowcase on fan blades by sliding it over each one, then wiping as you slide the pillowcase off. This will trap the dust and prevent it from floating around. On lamp shades, use a lint roller. Dust adheres to the sticky pads rather than settling on the table.

Cleaning the Shower and Bathtub

There’s nothing like a hot steam in the shower or soak in the bath, but when your glass door or grout accumulates water spots and calcium buildup, it doesn’t seem as relaxing anymore. Use a squeegee to wipe down the door after each shower. If buildup occurs, there’s no need to use harsh chemicals. Remove it with a wet dryer sheet, white vinegar, or a paste made of baking soda and water. When it’s time to clean the bathtub, slice an orange or grapefruit in half, sprinkle it with coarse salt, and scrub the grime away.

Vacuuming

Dirty carpets stand out in a room, so make sure you are vacuuming them properly to keep them looking clean. Don’t let the vacuum bag become full of dust, hair, and dirt, which reduces the suction power. Instead, empty it when it’s two-thirds full. Check the brushes and rollers after each session for threads and tangled hair, which can burn out the motor and prevent dirt from being swept into the vacuum.

Washing Knives

While it’s easy to put all your plates and utensils in the dishwasher, knives are something that shouldn’t go in there. A dishwasher can dull your knives, which will, in turn, make them more dangerous to use. Instead, wash them by hand with warm, soapy water to keep them sharp and ready to chop veggies.

Changing Air Filters

To keep your air conditioning unit in tip-top shape and blowing cool air, change your air filters once a month. While you may think you’re saving money by waiting longer to change the filter, it will actually end up costing more because the AC unit is working harder. You’re also not getting clean air if using a dirt filter. You can also add some indoor plants that act as air purifier.

By utilizing these tips, you’ll ensure your house is not only clean, but it’s also been cleaned properly.
