How to DIY Your Dance Costume

By  |

Dancers are very passionate about dancing, but they also know how expensive costumes can be. If you have some DIY sewing and knitting skills, you can make life a little easier for yourself.

Mastering some sewing skills can be a plus for you as a dancer.

If you want to take your sewing skills to the next level, you should try the following tricks to turn a plain outfit into a dazzling one:

Add a Brooch

You can add some flair to your outfit by including a simple broach. A broach allows you to add several details to your outfit, such as hiking up one part of your skirt, pinching parts of your costume, and adding a nice finish. If you are adding a brooch to your costume, you should clamp it down or use some glue to ensure that it stays on and does not fall during your performance.

Add Lace

Lace can add a lot of depth to your outfit. You can add lace that contrasts your costume color, matches it, laces with rhinestones, pearled lace, etc. You can even dye your lace if you want to give it a unique color.

Although you do not need to be a sewing expert to add lace to your costume, your skills will come in handy. When adding lace, make sure that you stretch the material that you are putting the lace on first. You can put some cardboard under it to stretch it to be the same size as the lace.

That way, the lace will not look too big and start hanging.

Layering

Layering is a very simple method that does not require any sewing. You can layer a number of different things such as gloves and skirts. If you are looking for diversity, consider layering different colors on top of each other. However, if you want a uniform look, you should layer similar colors together. This simple technique will change the whole look of your outfit.

Add Fabric

The best way to make your costume look amazing is by adding some fabric. If you do not know how to sew, you can add it in a way that does not require sewing. For instance, you can tie on the fabric or use knots and broaches to add fabric to your costume. Transforming a plain dance costume is fun, so you should not be too hard on yourself.

Change the Hemline

You can transform your simple skirt into an amazing one by changing the hemline. You can modify the hemline of your pants, skirt, or top. You have probably seen people wearing a costume that is half pant and half short on one side. To achieve this look, you just have to cut off one pant leg and hem it. You can also layer your square skirt on top of another square skirt to achieve an amazing look.

Rhinestoning

You will be charged hundreds of dollars if you ask a professional to add rhinestones to your outfit. All you need to do is buy some glue and rhinestones. Make sure that you buy fast drying glue to ensure that the rhinestones do not come off and work in a well-ventilated room.

Dancewear has become very expensive and it is only going to get worse. As the popularity of dance increases, the demand for dancewear is going to increase and the price will skyrocket along with it. You should make your own costumes to beat the hefty price tags.

If you are not good at sewing, you should look for more affordable alternatives such as discount dancewear at Just for Kix.
