How to find plus size swimwear this summer season

By  |

Sometimes making the right style choices is half the battle, especially when it comes to finding the right swimwear for the summer season. For plus size ladies, this can be more of a chore than anything, because it can often feel as though your choice is limited. Fear not, with more and more retailers finally embracing plus size inclusivity; you’re bound to find your ideal swimsuit this season.

What’s your body shape?

As with all clothing choices, your body shape is an important factor to take into consideration. Everyone is different and choosing swimwear that suits your body shape will not only allow you to show off your best assets but help you take attention off the areas that you may not feel as confident about laying bare. Which of these main female body shapes do you fit into?

Apple

The majority of your weight lies with on your bust and around your hips whereas your legs are smaller.

Pear

You collect your weight around your bottom and hips, with a smaller waistline and narrower shoulders.

Hourglass

You have wide hips and bust compared to a very narrow waist.

Rectangle

A straight shoulder line, bottom, and hips with not much definition on the waist.

Once you know which category you fit into you’ll find it much easier to shop for something that suits you. It’s still always a good idea to try on a number of different styles before you commit to a purchase.

Keep it simple in a swimsuit

A classic, one-piece swimsuit will allow you to benefit from more coverage and help to nip in your waist, creating an hourglass figure. Choosing a style with a pattern down the centre of the garment or coloured panels down the side will elongate your body, and an underwired cup can give you the support you need on your bust. You might also want to opt for further bust support with a halter neck if you don’t mind the tan lines!

Bare (almost) all in a bikini

Fans of the bikini that feel a little self-conscious about their middle might want to opt for something with a larger bottom. A higher waistline will help to slim the stomach and usually looks more flattering on your thighs. For the top half, the same applies in regards to your bust – underwire can be a lifesaver when you want a dip in the pool.

Tame your tummy with a tankini

Unlike a bikini, a tankini can give you a little more coverage with traditional bottoms and a longer top that covers your tummy. Again, a halter neck or thicker straps can give you more support up top and many on the market today give you the option of detachable straps, meaning more comfort and an even coverage when you’re lying down.

If you’re struggling for inspiration, there are plenty of online retailers out there that can point you in the right direction of swimwear that suits you. Ashleigh Plus Size, for example, is a site dedicated to the curvier lady and therefore knows exactly which brands stock extended sizes
