Sydney – Top 10 Things to Do

By  |

Ah, Sydney. The most populous city in the Land Down Under is truly one of those cities that simply have a soul. It doesn’t matter whether you’re Australian or not, visiting Sydney should definitely be on your bucket list. When it comes to cities this big, it’s even fair to say that Sydney is probably the most beautiful of them all. Why? It’s rather simple. The landmarks, amazing architecture, eye-pleasing botanic gardens, splendid harbor, and of course sun-bathed beaches are great, and they can leave a long-lasting impression on anyone who decides to visit.

Energy is something that you can simply feel in the air in Sydney. The city’s buzzing all the time, and after a while, a person can honestly feel like they are becoming a part of something bigger.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking for adventure on the beaches, or a vibrant and relaxed nightlife, Sydney has it all! Check out this list and see for yourself!

Botanic Gardens

What do you do when you come tired into the city that never sleeps? What do you do when you just want to rest and collect your thoughts, and you’re not a couch potato? You go to one of the beautiful botanic gardens.

Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens are one of the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere. It all started in 1810 with Governor Macquarie and his wife, and over time it grew into this oasis of calm in the middle of a concrete jungle. If you get tired of walking and looking at all those magnificent plants, you can always grab a bite or sip hot tea and coffee in the Botanic Gardens restaurant.

Gordon’s Bay

Prepare to get completely wet! Grab your bikini, grab your snorkels and take a trip to Gordon’s Bay. Sydney is famous for its beaches and marine life, and here you can experience it up close. Why Gordon’s Bay and not some other location? Because it’s perfect for beginners, and to be perfectly honest for taking pictures for Instagram. The water is crystal clear, and you can easily spot starfish, blue gropers, and even baby sharks! Yup, baby sharks are cute, if you were wondering about that.

Taronga Zoo

Want to have a wild time? Well, there’s no better way to do that than to visit the Taronga Zoo. This place is big and full of animals – even those you might not be familiar with. To make the most out of your visit inform yourself about feeding times and the shows (this info is usually listed on their website). The bird and seal shows are mind-blowing, but that’s not the best thing about it.

The best thing is that a large portion of the money you’ll spend there is going towards funding noble causes. So, buy a plush toy for your niece (or yourself) and help save a species from extinction.

The Sydney Opera House

Ok, let’s get this clear. You simply cannot visit Sydney and avoid taking a tour of the Sydney Opera House. This mind-blowing building shaped like blowing sails or shells (depending on who you ask) is this city’s star attraction.

Take an organized tour and get a good look behind the scenes. Take a stroll through theaters, studios, exhibition rooms and a concert hall. And make sure to snap a couple of pictures, no one will mind.

Bridge climbing

Sure, it’s expensive; of course, it seems dangerous. Oh, yes, you have to wear a pretty ugly gray suit. And guess what? It’s an unforgettable experience. Well, if you’re not afraid of heights it is. Visiting celebrities love climbing Sydney bridges, so don’t be surprised if you end up in a group with Nicole Kidman or our beloved King in the North, Kit Harrington.

The climb is scary but is not as scary as you might think, and there are rest points along the way. Most people take a couple of pics of Sydney from the top, so don’t forget to bring your camera!

Book a kayaking tour

There’s no city in the world that has so many places for kayaking. You can go kayaking through dense bushlands, sandy beaches and even creeks. You might think that kayaking is only for old people who just want to pass the time, but that’s certainly not the case. For the best possible experience, book a guided kayaking tour and discover the beaches that can be reached only by boat.

Dine

Meat pies are Australia’s most popular dish but you probably already know how they taste like. Or, maybe, you simply don’t like eating meat. But don’t worry, there are plenty other places where you can make your tongue feel happy.

The Australian Restaurant of the Year winner, Sepia, obviously comes highly recommended, but it’s located in the heart of the city. If you want to have a stunning view while eating something tasty, then don’t make a mistake – visit Quay in the Sydney Harbour.

Chippendale

Truth to be told, Chippendale has become Sydney’s hippest suburb. There are dozens of production houses, fashion design studios, and art galleries in this suburb, so those with an obsessive attention to aesthetics usually book accommodation in unconventional places like The Old Clare Hotel during their stay.

The White Rabbit Gallery will probably be the first place you’ll want to visit in this area, but keep in mind that visiting the Spice alley is a must. Take a stroll through it, eat noodles under the starry sky and experience Singapore while you’re in Sydney!

Camp

You did not know that you can camp in Sydney, did you? Yes, you can, and you can do that on Cockatoo Island. Wake up to one of the world’s greatest views and learn about the island’s history. An island that was a prison and a shipyard simply cannot be boring. Oh, don’t worry about bringing your own tent, you can rent one there.

Bondi Beach

A list like this would not be complete without Bondi Beach. It’s one of the top 10 beaches in Australia, and it’s easy to see why. The water is clear, the sand is soft, and the people on this beach are really good looking. Seriously, a person could spend all day just watching those beautiful bodies!

Sydney is a joy to explore, and there are many things that are not on this list, but they should be. One thing is for sure – Sydney will stay in your mind and your heart forever after you visit it.
