One of London’s greatest strengths is its uniqueness; there is nowhere quite like it in the UK, or indeed on Earth. It is the unique charm of London that draws many of its visitors, but it is also these oddities that means it takes some time for newcomers to adjust to London. The more prepared you are for your new life when you move, the smoother your transition will be.

Moving to London? Here’s What You Need to Know

Use Public Transport

We Brits love a good moan, and there are certain topics that are all but guaranteed to produce a consensus of negativity. One of these topics is public transport. It is true that public transport throughout the UK leaves a lot to be desired, especially when compared to the rest of Europe.

However, London is something of an exception to this rule. The home of the world’s first underground transport system is much better at delivering public transport services than the rest of the country. Just make sure to equip yourself with an Oyster Card before you travel. Oh, and remember that buses don’t take cash!

Shop Around

This applies to everything in London, whether it’s your house or your food, you should make sure to shop around and ensure that you are getting the best deal possible. London is a very expensive city to live in, no matter what you do, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways of lessening the impact.

As an adjunct to this, remember that London is a very touristy city. This means that there are, unfortunately, a great many shops, stalls, and traders dotted around who are trying to peddle low-quality goods to those that don’t know better. This happens in any capital city and is an excellent reason not to impulse buy too often in London.

Finding a Job

There are roughly 8 million people living in the nation’s capital. That means that there is heavy competition for everything, from homes to jobs. This itself can make living in London stressful, especially if you haven’t made plans for all these things before you leave. It is very wise to arrange some kind of employment before you move to London as there are no guarantees you will easily find something when you are there.

Should you find yourself unexpectedly between jobs while living in London, you should turn to agencies like Staff Heroes who can pair you up with potential temporary work. For example, click here to see the temporary waiting work requirements.

Having Fun for Free

While London is a very expensive city to live in, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of ways of having fun without having to spend a penny. For one thing, London is home to a range of museums which cater to different interests. These museums are often free to enter, in fact, there is no city in the world that can offer anything close in this regard. Of particular note are the National Portrait Gallery, and the National Gallery itself. The natural history museum us an unmissable experience, as is the science museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum

As long as you are prepared before you move, you should find London a welcoming and enjoyable city. Most people find it a little overwhelming at first, but as long as you keep calm and make sure to plan your move carefully, you should have no trouble.
