The Beauty Myths We All Fall For

By  |

Let’s face it, whenever we see a flashy advert for a new brand of lipstick or moisturizing cream, I’m sure that we’re almost all guilty of wanting to buy it to try it out. That’s largely because all of these new products often come with a lot of different promises. Many will say they can help you achieve even better beauty results and make you look better than ever before. But are those claims really the case, and is there enough science behind them to back them up?

The beauty industry is based on a lot of half-truths and claims that aren’t really all that they seem. Because of this, there are now a lot of myths that many women believe to be true when, in actual fact, there is no real truth behind them. This can lead to women spending excessive amounts of money on pointless products and adding some steps to their daily routine that don’t really add anything to their beauty.

Do you wish that you could sort out all the beauty myths from the truth? Well, it may not be quite as difficult as you might think. In fact, here are some of the beauty industry’s most common myths. Now that you’ve debunked these, you don’t have to follow them ever again, which should help to greatly improve your overall beauty regime!

Use Cucumbers To Reduce Eye Puffiness

If you ask women how they can reduce the puffiness that appears around their eyes after a poor night’s sleep, I’m sure that they will tell you that the answer is to place thin slices of cucumber over their eyes. In fact, if you have ever visited a beauty spa for a facial or massage, you might have been given some cucumber to place over your eyes while you relax. But does cucumber really help to liven up the skin around your eyes and reduce puffiness? Well, the short answer is no. It’s true that cucumbers are sources of the vitamins that help keep out skin healthy, but if you want those little slices to really make a difference, you would need to keep them over your eyes for a very long time to give all the vitamins a chance to be absorbed by the skin. For a more effective and quicker solution, you should look for eye creams that have been made with cucumber.

Hair Gets Used To Shampoo If You Don’t Switch It Regularly

There is an old wives tale that says our hair and scalp can familiarize themselves with the shampoo that we use and, if we do not switch the type we use every so often, our hair will get used to it. The shampoo then won’t be as effective and won’t leave our locks quite as glossy and soft as it once did. In fact, it could even start to dry out the hair or leave it greasy. However, this simply isn’t true. There is no way your hair can react to the shampoo that you use. If you think that your usual shampoo and conditioner aren’t working as well as they once did, it is likely that the needs of your hair and scalp have changed. This can happen for numerous reasons. More often than not, it’s all down to the season and your hair is reacting to the humidity or cold. So, you might have to take these changes into consideration and find some extra hair serums or a new shampoo that can deal with them for the time being.

Pump The Mascara Brush Before You Apply

Have you ever noticed that some women tend to pump their mascara brush in the little bottle before they apply it to their lashes? Again, this is something that has been born out of an old wives tale and is probably a piece of advice that has been passed down from generation to generation. Many people pump their mascara brush because they believe they can get more product on the bristles to apply to their lashes. The more mascara they can get on their lashes means the thicker and more voluptuous they will look. But should we really be pumping the brush? Does it really get more mascara on the bristles? It’s true that it will get more product onto the brush, but it could be causing a problem with the shelf life of your makeup. Doing the pumping action will force more air into the bottle, which will cause the mascara to dry out a lot quicker. This can make it flake when it is applied, and can also encourage the growth of bacteria in the pot. So, next time you think about pumping the brush, you might want to swirl it around instead. It will increase the amount of product on the bristles, but won’t let so much air into the pot.

Using Anti-Aging Creams Actually Increases Wrinkles

Even though there are hundreds of anti-aging creams available in shops and online, there are still some whispers going around that they can actually make your skin worse. In some cases, some people say that these creams can even speed up the development of wrinkles and age lines. So, how come some creams claim that they have hard science to back up the alleged results and benefits that users can expect? Well, it’s all to do with the ingredients in these creams. Just take LifeCell, for instance. Does Lifecell skin really work when it comes to reducing wrinkles and age lines? Well, the answer is yes as it has retinol in, one of the most important chemicals to prevent the skin’s premature aging. When it comes to buying a new face cream, you should always look for products that are made with retinol. Otherwise, there you might find that your anti-aging cream actually has the opposite effect to what you expect!

You Can Shrink Your Pores

One of the biggest claims that any beauty product can make is that it can shrink the appearance of your pores. Unfortunately, this claim won’t be backed up by any hard science as it simply isn’t true. In actual fact, there is hardly anything that can be done to change the shape or size of your pores. It’s true that you can minimize the appearance of your pores, but there isn’t a special product that will do just that. The best thing you can do to try to guarantee that your pores aren’t quite so visible is to exfoliate at a few times a week. Just make sure you aren’t exfoliating every day as this can irritate your skin.

Heat Protectant Isn’t Necessary If You Rarely Use Hot Tools

Some people think that they can get away without using any heat protectant on their hair if they only use hot styling tools every once in a while. That’s not the case, though, and even if you use hair straighteners, curling tongs, or a hairdryer just once a month, you are still at risk of causing damage to your hair. The only way you are going to effectively protect your hair is by applying a good-quality heat protectant before you apply any heat. Even forgetting to do so just the one time could leave your hair very brittle and dry.

Plucking Hairs Makes More Come Back

Another old wives tale that many women believe is that if they pluck a hair from their chin, then double will grow back in its place. As a result, some women refuse to pluck hairs and would rather spend money getting their chin waxed by their local beautician. Some people also believe that plucking gray hairs from their head will speed up more gray strands growing. Both of these myths aren’t true. At the end of the day, removing hair in this way isn’t going to encourage the growth of more. Unfortunately, though, there is nothing you can do once you start going gray as it’s our genes that determine our individual aging process.

Throw Away Shattered Blusher

Do you always throw away your compact blusher whenever you drop it and it shatters? Lots of women do this as they think that the blusher is now unusable. However, that really isn’t the case. In fact, there is a way you can fix it all back together again. All you need to do is rub a little rubbing alcohol into it and it should be then easy enough to mold it all back together. Then simply leave it to dry. Once it has dried out, it should be ready to use again just like before!

Toothpaste Makes Pimples Go Away

Another common myth that many women believe is that applying toothpaste to pimples will make them go away. This isn’t true, though, especially if your pimples are a result of hormonal acne. The best way to stop the development of spots and pimples is to cleanse your face twice a day with an antibacterial cleanser.

Now you know that you don’t need to take any notice of all the beauty myths above!
