Looking After You When Life Is Getting Too Much

By  |

Life can be hectic, and when you’re busy in your day to day routine, it’s easy to forget about simply taking care of yourself. If you have children, they are going to be your main priority, and that’s understandable. However, it’s important to take time for yourself because if you don’t, you could end up feeling the pressure all at once. But how, when you’ve got a career, children, chores, relationships, and other commitments to take care of, do you look after yourself? We’ve got some great tips on how you can concentrate on looking after you when life is getting too much. Check them out:

Use music to help relax you

Music can be wonderful for encouraging and accelerating moods. If you’re exercising, for example, you’re likely to put on fast pace music to help motivate you into working out harder. The same goes for relaxing. Find music that helps you relax when you’re really feeling the pressure. If you’re allowed to listen to music at work, pop some headphones in and drown out everything that’s going on around you for five minutes. You’ll soon find that you’re able to carry on, and you’re feeling much less stressed than before. You could also use this technique at home when things are getting stressful too!

Don’t let anxiety ruin a perfectly good day

We all suffer from some form of anxiety from time to time, and that’s completely normal. However, a sudden bout of anxiety can completely change the course of your day. While we think that your Doctor should definitely be your first port of call, there are other things that you could be doing to ensure that anxiety doesn’t ruin a perfectly good day:

  • Much like above, use music to help you take your mind off things.
  • Go for a short walk to get some fresh air and clear your mind.
  • Use breathing techniques to quickly and efficiently ride out your anxiety attack.
  • Drink some cold water. It helps shock the body slightly and can bring you out of any feelings of anxiety.
  • Speak to someone about how you’re feeling. Sometimes, talking it out can help make it go away.

Get a babysitter!

Children are the light of our lives, and there’s no doubt about it. However, seeing to their every need without a break can become exhausting. Get yourself a babysitter from time to time so that you and your spouse can enjoy some time together, alone, to be yourselves again. Perhaps you could go out for a meal together, go to the theatre, or simply curl up at home in front of the TV. Not only will this help you relax, but it will give your relationship a new lease of life too!

Go to bed early

We all dream of getting enough sleep, yet when the children are in bed it’s all too tempting to stay up later and catch up on adult TV for once. While this is fine from time to time, it’s important to ensure that you’re getting enough sleep. Go to bed earlier so that you’re able to get that all important shut eye that you’ve been thinking about all day.

Pamper yourself!

When you’re feeling especially out of sorts, one of the best things to do is give yourself a good old pampering. Take a long bath, apply a face mask, and curl up with a good book. You’ll feel ten times more human in the morning. Pampering isn’t just for women either! Men deserve a good pampering session just as much as women, so make sure you’re taking part too, men!

Get your debts sorted out

One thing that can make you feel stressed, anxious, and generally down, is debts. In this day and age, it’s all too easy to fall into debt. While it might seem easier to ignore it and sort it out another day, the stress is only going to pile on your back further. Get your debts sorted out so that you’ve got a clearer mind and nothing looming over your head.

Consider a new career

When you’re stuck in a job that isn’t going anywhere, or that makes you more stressed out than needed, it might be time to consider a new career! A change in career might just give you the uplift that you need!

Cut out alcohol

Pouring your favourite tipple after a long and diffiult day is something that many of us look forward to. However, alcohol isn’t going to help your physical or mental health in any way. Cut out alcohol as much as possible and you’ll soon find that you’re feeling more like yourself!

Take a day every now and then

Finally, sometimes all you need is a day to yourself. Whenever possible, take the time to have a day to do whatever you want every now and then. Whether this be staying in bed as long as you want, catching up with friends, or even going for a long walk with the dog, allowing yourself to be you will do you the world of good. You should also encourage your spouse to do the same so that both of you can feel replenished, and happier in general.
