Stress, unhealthy lifestyle, and irregular eating can affect the way your skin and hair look, not to mention it could be bad for your overall health. That’s why getting a head to toe detox is a must and there’s no better time to do it than in spring. Forget two-day juicing cleanses and similar programs that could damage your health even more – it’s time to detox your whole body properly and thus get ready for the summertime.

Cleanse your body

That old saying “you are what you eat” isn’t far from the truth – your body depends on what you feed it with so, naturally, every detox has to start by clearing up your diet. This doesn’t mean you should starve yourself for a few days and then splurge after it. On the contrary, detoxifying your diet shouldn’t be restrictive but a way to start eating better.

The most important thing is to start drinking more water. Somewhere between 6 and 8 cups a day is a good dosage but make sure you start your every day with warm lemon water. It will be like a natural flush for your body and help the digestion thus making the whole detox process faster and more effective.

Staying away from caffeinated drinks and processed food as much as you can is the next step. As a general rule, you should only eat foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. Minimize meat and dairy and maximize fresh fruits and vegetables. If you’re not much of a salad fan, try making delicious detox smoothies to help you ingest more vegetables and fruits without even noticing it.

Purify your skin

Hectic lifestyle, makeup products, and lack of sleep – all of that can accumulate and show on your skin and make you look tired as well as older than you really are. It’s not just enough to clean your face daily – you need to purify it deeply in order to see the results.

Again, drinking water is key – without it, your skin cells can become dehydrated, and that can result in dry, flaky skin, more prone to wrinkles and early signs of aging. Besides pure water, teas like nettle, ginger, and dandelion are proven to be beneficial for the skin, so make tea parties part of your beauty routine.

Try exfoliating and dry brushing to physically remove impurities from your skin but make sure you include clay-based products in your beauty arsenal as well. Clay is highly absorbent and that’s why a good clay mask, like the one from Dr Hauschka collection, can absorb impurities and provide deep cleansing as well as disinfection. Although it’s very absorbent, clay is completely natural and that’s why it won’t be as harsh as some chemicals are and won’t leave your skin after usage.

Revive your hair

Now that the winter is over, your hair is probably suffering from some consequences due to cold air, wind, and severe conditions it has been exposed to. Furthermore, summer is coming and sun rays and heat can be equally bad for your hair, so you see why spring is the best time to detoxify it and make it ready for new challenges.

Start by exfoliating the scalp to remove dead skin cells and let your hair breathe and grow freely. This can be done with homemade scalp scrubs or you can rely on the clay once again and make use of clay hair masks to remove impurities. Bentonite clay, for example, is known to be highly absorbent and you can make a hair mask by simply mixing ½ cup of clay with ½ cup of aloe vera gel and ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar.

You’ll also want to remove styling products residue from your hair by using non-drying yet purifying shampoo. Mineral buildup from tap water can be a real problem, too, so getting a water softening filter might be a good idea.
