GROUNDING – A NATURAL WAY TO REDUCE STRESS AND IMPROVE SLEEP.

Have you ever wondered why do you feel so relaxed while walking barefoot on the sand and playing in the waves on a beach? Did you ever give a thought on why walking barefoot on the grass in your lawn acts like an anti-depressant? This question struck my curious brain several times and it pushed me to make a study on why this happens. So here goes the secret behind this natural, God-given anti-depressant — the concept of earthing /grounding. The concept of getting in contact with the earth barefoot is called earthing /grounding. Walking barefoot on dirt, grass, sand or concrete is earthing and the effect is maximized when the surface is wet or humid. Human body is made up of cells which have electrical energy. Positive electrons build up in our bodies in the form of free radicals. These free radicals are a group of atoms that promote the aging process and are responsible for various diseases. So in order to balance out these positive charges, our body needs abundant supply of negative charges. Earth is a natural source of negative electrons and our body is designed in such a way that these negative electrons are distributed from the feet to all the body parts. But we are blocking our body to be in contact with the mother earth by using plastic or rubber footwear, carpets and rugs.  Our ancestors, several centuries back, were healthier and long-lived when compared to us. This is because, they kept themselves in contact with the earth most of the time. Grounding ourselves can give us a long list of health benefits. Here are a few to mention:

  • Promotes immunity.
  • Reduces muscle tension.
  • Improved heart rate and circulation.
  • Provides good relaxation and good sleep
  • Makes your stress levels go low.
  • Promotes antioxidants in the body.
  • Reduces inflammation.
  • Slows down the aging process.
  • Protects the body from EMFs
  • Helps in balancing out the harmones and solves female menstrual problems.
  • Helps in increased healing rate.
  • Supports adrenal health.

Now you might be thinking, “Oh this girl is gone crazy!! Does she expect me to go to my work barefoot? How is it even possible to be in contact with earth all the time?”. Well, where there is a will, there is a way. So, read on!! First, ditch your plastic and rubber footwear and invest in a good pair of leather footwear. Plastic and rubber are insulators and they block the negative ions from coming in contact with your body, whereas leather is a good conductor and allows the passage of electrons through them. So, you are wearing the shoe and at the same time, you are in contact with the earth. Second, invest in an earthing mat. You can place this near your computer desk, or you can even sleep on it to electrically ground yourself. Third, reduce your usage of WIFI and cell phones (if possible) as they increase the free radical build up in the body. Try to walk barefoot for few minutes a day on the grass or sand or whatever earthing medium you wanna choose. So, all the lovely mommies out there, let your cute little one get some dirt on his/her feet next time by walking barefoot — A little dirt is gonna make more good than harm <3
