Jessica Alba, more than an actress
Jessica Alba began her acting career with small roles beginning in 1994 finally getting her breakthrough role the movie, Honey. She also scored the role of Sue Storm in Fantastic Four where she met her husband, Cash Warren. She has been nominated for Golden Globes, People’s Choice Awards and has won several other awards throughout her career. When Alba became pregnant with her first child, she was concerned with all of the chemicals in baby products and decided to begin a company with safer products. It is now a well-known, successful business, The Honest Company.
Alba may be best known for her roles in movies like, The Eye and Valentine’s Day. She has proven to be more than an actress who kicks butt on the big screen. She was recently named one of the wealthiest women in the United States by Forbes Magazine. She is an entrepreneur of a billion dollar company and a mother to two young daughters.
The Honest Company is an organic company. The line includes beauty products, bath and body products and baby products. As of January 2014, Honest products can be found in retail stores around the United States. Stores in your neighborhood you can find the products at include Nordstrom, Whole Foods Market, Costco, buybuy Baby and Right Start.
Jessica Alba and Christopher Gavigan founded the company together. They wanted the best products for their homes and families and could not find what they wanted in other brands. So, they decided to do it themselves. “We tried to think of all the qualities we would want in a dream brand – savvy style, sustainability, and extraordinary service & convenience all wrapped in a passion for social goodness, tied with a bow of integrity and sprinkled with a little cheeky fun.”
The Honest Company’s goal “is to relieve you of a few tasks by delivering the best family essentials to your doorstep – to simplify your life and bring more delight to every day. Our dream is to re-define the “family brand” and create something – with you – that’s better for all families, everywhere.”
The company has a social goodness mission that states, “We believe in doing our part”, and we are on a “mission to build healthier, safer families. In partnership with you, we are committed to making real change possible, and hope to inspire others to do the same. We hope you’ll join us by taking part in our community, sharing our educational efforts, or purchasing one of our products, to help fuel our efforts for even a deeper impact.”
Forbes reported, Alba started the company in 2008 when she was pregnant with her oldest daughter, Honor. She is now mother to two beautiful daughters, Honor,7, and Haven,3. She said, “I wanted to create a safe and healthy environment for my daughter, and when I looked around at what was available for me to do that, I just didn’t find the answer. There wasn’t a brand that really spoke to me as a modern woman, a brand that was transparent, that used unquestionably safe ingredients, but also was effective.”
The company has an impressive $1 billion worth. Alba owns an estimated 15–20 percent stake in the company which sells all-natural, chemical- and hormone-free products ranging from diapers and wipes to organic beeswax sunscreen and a chic $170 vegan-leather diaper bag.
Before getting the online retail store opened in 2012, Alba spent more than three years doing research and networking to help perfect her business. During that time, she was also lobbying in Washington DC to reform 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act.
In the past year, the company made $150 million in sales and is on track to make $250 million in 2015. Alba’s business advice after building The Honest Company is to “never be the smartest person in the room. There’s always going to be somebody who’s smarter to learn from—and that’s a good thing.” She also believes being so open to advice and feedback strongly contributed to the success of the company.
