Should you be using organic makeup?

Women wear makeup every day. They probably do not think of the ingredients that they are putting into their body. Recently, women have become more conscious of what they are putting into their bodies. Not wanting to harm their bodies many have switched to organic makeup, but does it even matter?

According to Lori Stryker, B.Sc., B.H.Ec., B.Ed, the chemicals in cosmetics can cause “Chemical Cocktail Effect”. This is because some of the common ingredients in makeup are known irritants and carcinogens because they are made from synthetic petroleum. Stryker’s full list of ingredients to avoid can be found at [1]

Making the switch to organic or natural products can help with skin problems, such as acne, contact dermatitis, irritations and allergies. The product is organic if it is free from, or contains minute amounts of artificial chemical additives.

When buying organic products be sure they aren’t only claiming to be natural. They may contain small amounts of plant extracts, but the bulk of the product is petroleum based and loaded with fragrances.

Eva Scrivo, a celebrity makeup artist and author of “Eva Scrivo on Beauty,” told FoxNews, “It doesn’t have to necessarily be organic- it just has to not have some of the harmful ingredients in the product.”

The most important thing when dealing with cosmetics is whether or not the ingredients are going to harm you, not whether the label says natural or organic. Be sure you know what is in your make up.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR), an organization operated under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), tests cosmetic ingredients and determines whether or not they are safe. Visit their site to learn more about what ingredients are in your favorite makeup at
