Traveling solo is one of the things that should be on your bucket list and on the list of things you must do at least once in a lifetime. It can be a scary and daunting idea to many people, especially if you don’t even like going to the movies alone, but it can also be the best thing you can do for yourself, and some argue, the best way to truly know and explore the country. You don’t have to be a loner on your trip, the point is to connect with local people as you move on your way to self-discovery. If your New Year’s resolution is to travel somewhere solo and have an amazing time, here is the list of trendy countries that will welcome you with open arms.

Ireland

Ireland is a great destination for your very first solo trip. People are especially very friendly here, so expect a very willing advice and help and even a chit chat no matter where you go. Of course, you must see Dublin and take a one day tour trips to the countryside from there. Take a literary tour in the city of literature and have a Guinness at the local pub, like a true Dubliner.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica is favorite Central American destination and for a good reason. It’s the happiest country in the world! It also attracts families, couples, adventurers and solo travelers too. The fact that it’s a visited touristic destination doesn’t take the exoticism and thrill of a different country from it. It’s a great choice for thrill seekers who enjoy surfing or zip-lining through the cloud forest. Tip: Due to the remoteness of the country, it’s better to seek apartments for short rent and stay a little longer to truly savor this part of planet.

Iceland

Iceland is one of the safest country in the world so it’s very convenient for solo female wanderers. Use the opportunity to get to know this winter wonderland country, dress in local knitwear and go to see the fjords, mud-pots, volcanoes, glaciers and sea cliffs. And don’t forget to spoil yourself with a spa day at the Blue Lagoon geothermal pool.

New Zealand

Breathtaking nature around every corner, New Zealand has a lot to offer and it attracts not only The Lord of the Rings fans, but adventure seekers too. If bungee jumping and zorbing is not your cup of tea, you can explore the culinary taste of New Zealand and visit countless vineyards on the wine island. You’ll fall in love with New Zealand’s diversity and unique way of life.

Croatia

Tourism in Croatia is at its peak during summer months, when the Adriatic Sea coastline is filled with sunbathing tourists, but if you want to avoid the crowds, spring and autumn is a great time to visit the beautiful historic city of Dubrovnik on the coastline, recently very popular because of its ancient city walls that served as a set for Game of Thrones. You can join in an organized tours if you’re a fan. It would be a shame to miss the capital, Zagreb, and have a coffee on the terrace of a bar overlooking the main city square.

Japan

You’ll not be lost in translation if you head to Tokyo by yourself.  Get fascinated with this megalopolis, indulge in what will probably be the best sushi, ramen and tempura you’ll ever taste, and head of to a more quiet and tranquil city of Kyoto, where you can stay in one of the modern hotels designed for single travelers. You can take the bullet train ride from Tokyo to Kyoto that passes by the Mountain Fuji.
