It’s not every day that a Hollywood celebrity figure announces they’re running for president, but when they do, it gets the people talking. While there is a lot of debate surrounding the 2016 presidential election, there have also been a few surprises. Rumor has it that Will Smith and Kanye West have both made remarks about running for president. So, real or fiction?
Will Smith fans got excited when Smith remarked, “If people keep saying all the crazy kinds of stuff they’ve been saying on the news lately about Muslims, they’re going to force me into the political arena.” Unfortunately for fans, Will Smith was just joking. “I was really kind of joking when I said that,” Smith says. However, he does believe that in the event that he were to run, he would be able to take on Trump, saying, “That would be very easy. I could handle that quite well.”
Kanye West, on the other hand, may be a bit more serious about running for president. The MTV VMAs took an unexpected twist when West finished off his eleven-minute speech with a shocking climax: “And yes, as you probably could have guessed by this moment, I have decided in 2020 to run for president.” It seems that even his wife, Kim Kardashian was surprised. Kim said on the Ellen Degeneres show, “That was news to me.” However, she does believe he is very serious. While West admitted to hating politics, he does care about the overall good of the people. In an interview with Vanity Fair, West said, “I hate politics. I’m not a politician at all. I care about the truth and I just care about human beings. I just want everyone to win, that’s all I can say, and I think we can. (Vanity Fair)
Whether it be the 2016 election, or the 2020 election, American citizens have been given a lot to think about. With the dynamic of our country at a constant change, the future of America is in the hands of no other than, “we the people.”
