Premadonna, a Miami entrepreneur, owns a popular place to get waist trainers at whatsawaist.com. He has helped make the fad happen by beginning the waistgangsociety, in which women can easily shave of inches from their waists.

“Waistgangsociety high quality Reshaping waistshaper is a unique latex material which attacks unwanted fat and impurities within your body. While wearing a garment or waist trainer, the tight compression will help to reduce food volume intake which will help achieve the healthier practice of smaller meals, more often, rather than three large meals a day.”[1]

There are important rules to follow while waist training to assure the best results.

According to whatsawaist, you have to ease into the training. When first starting, only use the corset 2 to 4 hours a day. As your body gets used to the tightness and discomfort of the contraption you can beginning adding more hours until you can comfortably wear it throughout the whole day. Then, after your body has become accustomed to the constriction of the second set of clasps you can move to the next size down.

The best results can be achieved through healthy eating and exercise as well as using the waist trainer daily.  In order to extend the life of your cincher and continue to use it daily follow Premadonna’s tips.

“1. Cleaning. Hand wash your corset in cold water or wash in gentle cycle in cold water. Do not put Corset in dryer! Lay corset flat to dry. 2. Air Dry your corset at the end of the day. Corsets must be dried out by turning the lining to the upper side and hanging over the back of a chair. Never hang on or near a heat source as over time this will cause shrinkage and eventual damage to the stitching. 3. Alternate Corsets. Rather than buy one corset, purchase 2, strong corsets and alternate them so that each corset gets to ‘rest’ between each wearing.”[2]

Though the results are said to be healthy and permanent, some are not so sure.

USA Today reports, Richard Cotton, exercise physiologist and director of certification with the American College of Sports Medicine in Indianapolis, argues that waist cinchers “work” depending on how you define efficacy.

“They work to provide you with a slimmer look, but they don’t do anything to actually reduce body fat,” Cotton says, “They could provide support for the core, but if you wear them all the time, they could decrease core strength because of that support. And that’s not really a good thing, because of lack of muscular stimulation, so they could be harmful in that manner.”[3]

Women’s Health Magazine repsorts, Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., clinical professor of ob-gyn at Yale School of Medicine believes your body will go back to its original shape. If you wear it too tight and restrict your breathing too long it can be more harmful than helpful. It can even cause possible rib damage.[4]

Health.com reports, Caroline Apovian, M.D., professor of medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and a spokesperson for The Obesity Society says that use needs to be immediately loosened or stopped if breathing is hard and heartburn or reflux occurs. Your stomach might be pushed up beyond the diaphragm.[5]

Celebrity trainer, Nicole Ghor, believes using the corsets while working out will reduce ability to work hard because the trainer makes it more difficult to take deeper breaths. It also may cause back acne as a result of the extra sweat.[6]

If a tinnier waist is what you desire than the waist cincher is for you, but if you are looking for permanent weight loss try a work out regiment and healthy eating instead.
