French cuisine in the heart of the Meat Packing District – Bagatelle

By  |

Located in the heart of the Meatpacking District, New York City, Bagatelle is a French lounge that was designed specifically to return a European feel back to the neighborhood. Owners Aymeric Clemente, Remi Laba, Jonathan Segal and Celeste Fierro opened the flagship location in June 2012 in a former Collective space located at One Little West 12th Street.

The Ambiance

The ambiance changes based on when you arrive. If you go during the week, Bagatelle is a fine-dining establishment. If you arrive on the weekend during the day, there are people dancing and DJ’ing for a brunch party. This leads late into the night when Bagatelle’s turns into a nightclub/lounge.

The Décor

When you first arrive, you will realize that the establishment is bright due to the white-on-white furniture and decoration selection. This was inspired by a naughty, sexy and playful French woman who is inviting and fun! The location boasts French paintings with beautiful flowers in decorative vases, detailed molding at the bar and around the room as well as different types of decorative wine bottles. As a bonus in the warmer months, there is a small terrace that wraps around the corner of the building.

The Menu

Bagatelle’s menu is comprised of contemporary French cuisine that spans two continents: Europe and North America. The chefs hail from Alsace, Brittany and Normandy but have worked under some of the best chefs in the world such as Laurent Gras and Daniel Boulud. A few of the highlights of the menu include the Crispy Roasted Artichokes Salad, 1,000 Layers Crepes Cake and Maine Scallops “Au Pistou.”

For starters, try  the Tartare de Thon which consists of all-natural Yellow fin tuna, cilantro, citrus soy vinaigrette, avocado and taro chips. As an entrée, the recommendation is the Poulet Truffle Pour Deux which is a whole roasted chicken in truffle with roasted Yukon gold potatoes, button mushrooms and shallots. This entrée is meant to be shared.

For the mother of all desserts, try the $1,000 Mauboussin Mega Sundae which includes scoops of vanilla ice cream, Dom Perignon Rose sorbet, chocolate truffles, whipped cream, macarons, chocolate vodka sauce, gold leaf and gilded brownies and a black steel, white gold Mauboussin ring.
