Sugaring for the Summer

By  |

When asked how great their waxing experience was, most women would rate it quite low on the enjoyment level.  Summer is coming, and the scary realization is that bikini waxes are quite ideal and needed for some ladies who are in their bathing suits more often.  As a lady living in Southern California I suppose this has now become part of my upkeep routine, to my disdain.  The only time I was waxed “downstairs” I literally had to self-medicate with a bottle of wine after.

Naturally, when a friend mentioned I should start Sugaring I violently shook my head no.  Also, I was quite confused on what on earth a bunch of Sugar was going to do in the hair removal department.  She didn’t quite know how to explain it either, except that it didn’t hurt as much a regular Brazilian, and it was a healthier form of hair removal.  In LA we are ALL about the healthy trends, that’s for sure.  I looked up a couple reviews on places, and found a buy one get one deal at Sugar and Bronzed which seemed to be a popular spot in LA.

The preparation for Sugaring is much like a regular Brazilian; you must grow your hair out long enough to be plucked from your body.  In this case, they recommended about a half an inch at least.  Depending on how quickly your hair grows anywhere between 3-5 weeks should do the trick.  This seems unbearable to most of us, but I swear it’s worth it.

Once I arrived at Sugar and Bronzed they explained exactly the differences between a regular wax and Sugaring.  It is a water soluble sugar paste that doesn’t cause ingrown hairs, and in my case helped to correct them as well.   It also helps exfoliate the skin, and helps with the cell turnover similar to the exfoliation that is needed on the face.  Instead of pulling in the opposite direction of your hair like waxing, they pull in the natural direction of the hair growth.  For those worried about how the sugar and lemon will affect their sensitive skin, have no fear sugaring is hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic.

I of course showed up to my appointment writhing in fear. I will not say that it was painless, but I don’t think anyone would expect any sort of hair removal to be.  However, it was definitely more tolerable than waxing.  I would still recommend you take some Motrin before, especially if it’s the first time.  Each time thereafter becomes less frequent, and also hurts a bit less.  Eventually the hair starts to thin out, and doesn’t grow back as fast or as long.  Overall, I would recommend to anyone suffering frequent razor burn, ingrown hairs, or dark thick hair.  Sometimes no matter how much you shave these issues still arise.  So get out there and get Sugared ladies, then treat yourself to some vino!
