How to Prevent and Banish Wrinkles in Your 40s

By  |

A look at Different Creams, Ointments, and Other Recommendations

You look in your mirror and notice there are more wrinkles on your face at 40 than when you were 39. What can you do to prevent, or better yet, banish your wrinkles? There are many old wives tales on what to do, but here are some scientifically proven ways to fight your crow’s feet and smile lines.

Avoid the Sun

I know. This is difficult for everyone. The sun is apparently the public enemy number one for wrinkles. Since it is nearly impossible to avoid the sun, make sure to wear sunscreen when you leave the house even on a cloudy day. You do not need to wear SPF 100; wearing SPF 15 or 30 will suffice.

Not only does wearing sunscreen help prevent wrinkles, but it also protects you from skin cancer too. It is a two for one!

Smoking

Perhaps I should have listed this first. We all know the harm smoking does to our lungs and the rest of our body that it should not be too surprising that it causes wrinkles. There is an enzyme that breaks down collagen and elastic which are important components of healthy skin. Just do not smoke.

Wrinkle Creams that Work

Here is a list of anti wrinkle creams that work actually:

Alpha-hydroxyl acids (AHAs) – this help to stimulate collagen products. They help to lift dead skin cells and reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Retinoid (including Retin-A) –Retin A is the only FDA-approved topical treatment for wrinkles. It comes as a prescription cream to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It even improves past sun damage. If you are unable to get the prescription look for products with Vitamin A as Retinal is a natural for derived from it. Just to warn you it may cause some sun sensitivity and to always wear sunscreen with it.

Topical Vitamin C – Vitamin C has been found to increase collagen production. Not only does it help with collagen but it also protects against UVA and UVB rays, corrects pigment issues and improves inflammation in the skin. Look for Vitamin C with L-ascorbic acids for most wrinkle relief.

Idebenone–this is a super, powerful antioxidant. After just 6 weeks of use, a scientific study showed that 26% saw a reduction in skin roughness and dryness, 37% saw an increase in hydration, 29% saw a decrease in lines and wrinkles and 33% saw an overall improvement in skin that was damaged by the sun.

Pentapeptides – Pentapeptides, according to the National Institute of Health, can increase collagen production in sun damaged skin. When applied it stimulates collaged production while diminishing lines and wrinkles.

Sleep

Yes, sleep. It seems so easy that it is crazy to recommend, but most of us are not receiving an adequate amount of sleep each night. Also, when sleeping it is recommended to sleep on your back. Apparently, when sleeping on your side increases wrinkles on your cheeks and chin. Worse yet if you sleep face down it increases your chance of an unattractive furrowed brow.

Diet

  1. Salmon and other cold water fish contain protein which helps to create a nice skin.
  2. Also, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables too. They contain antioxidants that fight damaged skin.
  3. Soy products are known to protect and heal skin.
  4. Stay away from coffee and drink cocoa instead. Coffee dehydrated the skin. Cocoa helps with sun damage and makes the skin feel smoother.
  5. Water. Drink plenty of water to help skin stay hydrated. If you do not like the taste of water, add lemon or my personal favorite cucumber. It will make you feel as though you are having a spa day!

Moisturise

Yes. It sounds easy, but many of us do not remember to do it during our daily makeup regime. We think that only anti-aging products will help with wrinkles, but a basic moisturizer will too.

Washing you face

Do not over wash your face. It strips moisture which your face needs to be protected. Use a cleanser rather than soap. Also, I only wash my face once a day, and my skin became healthier looking once I began to do that.

Conclusion

There are so many ways to prevent and banish wrinkles without having to be injected with Botox. Look at ingredients and pay attention to old wives tales. They tend to be good and easy to follow. There are so many different ointments to choose from too. Just because you’re 40 doesn’t mean you have to look it!
