Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky at the 2016 Rio Olympics
After quitting swimming in 2012, Michael Phelps came back on fire at the 2016 Rio Olympics. On Sunday, August 7, Phelps and his relay team, Caleb Dressel, Ryan Held and Nathan Adrian, for the 4×100 brought home the gold. The team’s time was 3 minutes, 9.92 seconds. Dressel started with a 48.10, then Phelps had a 47.12, Held had a 47.79 and Adrian finished with a 46.97.[1] This gold medal would be Phelps’s 19th Olympic Gold of his career and 23rd total leaving him the most decorated Olympian of all time. It was not the first olympic victory for Team USA. Katie Ledecky won gold for her performance in the 400m freestyle. Ledecky’s time broke her own record (3:58.37 at the Pan Pacific Championship) at 3:56.46 this race, which is about five seconds faster than the closest of her competition.[2]
