Keep Skin Soft and Smooth for Fall

By  |

Autumn colors, apple picking and even pumpkin spice – there’s a lot to love about fall. But while pulling your boots out from the back of the closet is its own very special kind of joy, the season also brings with it dry air, chill winds and (for many of us) more work. All of that can add up to skin that goes from sun-kissed and dewy to dry and patchy.

If you’re among those who had no idea that skin changes in fall, you’re not alone. Practically no one thinks about the fact that summer’s end ought to mean transitioning to a new skincare regimen but facts are facts! When the temp drops, skin actually becomes more vulnerable to irritants and the effects of things like sun and dry air. Even worse, if your circulation isn’t in tip-top condition your complexion can suffer.

Luckily, autumn’s less-than-positive impact on the skin can be mitigated with a few simple lifestyle changes.

Don’t Abandon Those Healthy Habits

Wrap yourself in cable knit heaven and hibernate to your heart’s content but don’t start taking your skin for granted just because you’ve bagged up your bikini until next summer. The UV index can be just as high in fall, and the basics of beauty remain in play all year round. Your ongoing commitment to eating well, sleeping well and staying hydrated is where great skin begins.

Tip: Many people don’t know that snacking on foods like pumpkin, sweet potatoes and avocados can make skin look amazing.

Do Change Moisturizers

When the humidity tanks, it’s time add more moisturizing products to your routine. You may find that your skin is more sensitive in the chilly air so go au naturel with S.W. Basics Cream moisturizer, which includes just three ultra hydrating ingredients: rich shea butter, coconut oil and olive oil. Even if your skin is not particularly sensitive, it’s still a good idea to look for products with the fewest ingredients

Don’t Stop Maintenance Care

In summer, a once-a-week clay-based oil absorbing mask will help prevent warm weather breakouts. In fall, switch to a moisturizing mask as an antidote to all that dry air. Dr. Dennis Gross’s Hyaluronic Marine Hydrating Modeling Mask leaves skin feeling super soft and smooth, and the moisture infusion hydrates skin from the outside in. Exfoliate as needed but skip the soap and try a hydrating cleanser like Aromatica’s Orange Cleansing Sherbet.

Do Remember Your Lips

Chapped lips are one of the most obvious signs you need to up your H2O intake but a chill wind can also make your kisser feel anything but kissable. 100% Pure Organic Mint Lip Balm takes the sting out of chapped lips with its formulation of coconut oil, eucalyptus oil, vitamin E, and other nourishing ingredients so they have a chance to heal.

Tip: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day can make chapped lips a non-issue.

Don’t Forget the Sunscreen!

As already mentioned, the sun’s rays can be just as strong even though the temperature has dropped so it pays to use products – moisturizers and makeup – that offer full spectrum UVA/UVB protection. Applying sunscreen for leaf peeping may feel a little weird but your future self will thank you.

And Do Keep Learning

There are so many wonderful skincare resources out there, from GOOP (for dreamers) to Amway’s beauty and skincare blog (for more practical advice), so there’s no reason to put your beauty education on hold post-summer. New skincare products are hitting the market all the time and if you’ve struggled to find moisturizers, masks and makeup that make your skin feel soft and healthy then it’s important you stay up to date.

Remember, skincare isn’t just for summer! As the seasons change, make sure you’re taking the best possible care of your skin and you’ll look and feel beautiful all year round.
