A word that could light up the eyes of a person and elicit fear in another. There are some people who wear head-to-toe black—not because they hate them but they are too afraid of looking like a potpourri of mismatched patterns and colors.

There are a lot of hijabi women who incorporate the monochromatic wardrobe philosophy—not only because of its many benefits but also to adhere to a more modest Muslim wear code. However, there is nothing wrong with elevating and accentuating your Islamic dresses with little pops of colors.

It can be hard and difficult to break out of the habit to wear an all-black ensemble, so here are a few suggestions to help you start putting some accents into your hijab fashion.

Bright hijabs

Adding a bright hijab is the quickest and affordable way to put a pop of color to your otherwise monochromatic Muslim clothing. If you are not confident about this new venture, get a hijab with a bright pattern against a background in your usual color palette (think: Dolce & Gabbana’s daisy-printed hijab). This will instantly brighten your face.

Dramatic necklaces

Add drama to monochromatic clothes with colorful necklaces if you insist on wearing your current hijabs. They will have the same brightening effects to your face and make the overall look effortlessly beautiful and “complete” while keeping everything else in the same color palette.

Statement bags

Are your Islamic clothes mostly in black and neutrals? If they are, replace your everyday black bags with a bold, bright arm candy—they should complement your monochromatic attire well. Invest in a well-made bag in an exquisite rich color (think: magenta, mustard and emerald) that will instantaneously make you look a little more luxe. Take the Mulberry Raspberry Alexa Bag; it is roomy, can be worn many ways and gives a great splash of color to any neutral palette.

Colored denim

Jeans are probably staples in your hijab fashion look book so there is no better way to introduce color into your wardrobe than by wearing colored denim. Colored denim can be scary so try to build your collection by stages; start by wearing darker colored denim in burgundy, olive and aubergine before having the courage to wear yellow, teal or pink.

Vibrant socks

If socks are part of your wardrobe, pull on some vibrant colored or patterned socks to give a peek of color that adds more character to your usual one-colored outfits. Get a bunch of them at H&M or if you heading to Seoul, make sure you grab some cute, eclectic socks while you are there.

Bold shoes

Coco Chanel once said “A woman with good shoes is never ugly” and she is quite right. A great pair of shoes will make you feel good and give you the confidence to stride through a tough day. The modern woman is spoiled with the array of interesting choices of shoes so you should not have a hard time finding some in bold colors, so why stick to black shoes? There is no excuse to not perk up a neutral outfit with this easy option.

Be a pop of color

It is not hard to bring colors into your monochromatic wardrobe; it is best to take your time so that you can only wear colors that you like and that represent you as a person. It is not about being as colorful as Carrie Bradshaw and her crew; it is about finding ways to make your Islamic dresses interesting without falling off the modesty train. Try one or more of these suggestions to get started on the road of a more vibrant sartorial adventure!
