Conor McGregor Named on Forbes 30 Under 30 List

Just a few years ago most people wouldn’t have been able to tell you what the UFC was, nevermind name any of its fighters. Fast-forward to 2017 and not only are UFC events taking over from boxing as our most watched fighting events, but the fighters themselves have become bona fide celebrity superstars.

Take 28-year-old UFC fighter Conor McGregor, “The Notorious Fighter” has become a household name over the last 12 months and is rumoured to have a net worth of around $22million and earned an astonishing $3million for his rematch against Nate Diaz. Indeed, the 2016 UFC 202 rematch had a significantly higher buy rate than boxing’s biggest fight of the year, Alvarez vs Khan, – an astonishing 1,650,000 to 600,000 comparison. There’s little doubt that given a fight between boxing and UFC, the latter would be throwing a knockout blow.

But it’s not just in the ring, or rather pentagon, that McGregor is making headlines. Now the Irish fighter has been named in the 2017 European 30 Under 30 list of the most influential social stars across Europe. Which is an incredibly amazing achievement for the sports personality as the list also includes people who are highly successful in sectors such as business, finance and media.

McGregor also made history in 2016 by becoming the first mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter to make the Forbes list of top 100 highest-paid athletes for that year. Yet despite making the list at number 85 and holding some of the highest PPV viewings of the year, boxers are still coming out on top with their earnings. For instance, 39-year old Floyd Mayweather, who came in at number 16 on the list with a net worth of $350, made over $40million last year while being retired. So despite McGregor becoming one of the most popular sportsmen in the world, he still has a long way to go before he has accumulated the same financial status as Mayweather. Yet this is still an exceptional achievement in McGregor’s rags to riches story. Remember, this is a man who started out as a plumbing apprentice that had to cash welfare checks in order to get by.

Of course, rumours are that Mayweather is planning to come out of retirement for one last fight, against none other than McGregor himself in what would be an epic UFC vs Boxing super match with each fighter receiving $25million and a cut of the PPV earnings. Despite the fact that Mayweather has shut down rumours of him ever coming back for a fight, the fact that both himself and McGregor are still actively taunting each other over social media and in the press suggests that the fight could still be on the cards – especially if Mayweather gets the $100million pay-out he previously requested.

Even if the Mayweather fight never happens, there is no lack of fighters desperate to have a chance to come up against McGregor to prove their skills. Add to that the fact McGregor is being actively chased by the WWE to make an appearance and rumoured for roles in various movies and it’s clear that Conor McGregor will continue to climb the ranks of superstardom in 2017.
