Finding Inspiration in 2017

By  |

Changing up your makeup routine is an act that makes most shudder.  Everyone has their go to products, and a certain way they like to apply their makeup that looks for lack of better words, “like them.”  As a makeup artist I love trying new things, whether it be trends, or just simply different colors.  However, I often find that somehow many of my looks tend to be quite similar, even though I believe myself to be experimenting.  Since it’s a new year I have been attempting to completely revamp my look, and what appears “different” to me.  This often means thinking outside of the box, and looking to outside forces for inspiration.  Here are a few ways to get out of your comfort zone this new year.

Pick an object and Mimic It

The day I decided to try this I actually was eating a Doritos Locos Taco (Nacho Cheese to be exact).  On this particular day the taco looked particularly colorful to me, and I thought I should do a taco face!   Of course I meant taco inspired makeup, so I popped on my green contacts (lettuce), and used bright orange (the shell), yellow (cheese), and red (tomato).   Tied it all together with a brown lipstain, and brown fake freckles (like the freckles on the taco shells).  It doesn’t have to be a food, but just look around you and find something you can recreate.

Use Different Tools

There is no right and wrong way to use makeup tools.  Sure, each brush is labeled for the different uses, but that doesn’t mean we need to adhere to the labels.  Pick up a brush you normally use on one part of your face and try to apply a foreign product with it.  You may be surprised by the outcome, and actually dig the new look.

Find Beauty Influencers that have similar features

When I had red hair I often searched hashtags for red headed girls to see what kind of looks they were pulling off.  I was able to see a generalization of what things may look good on me without even trying them yet.  The same goes for eye color, skin complexion, and every feature you can think of.

Peep the Runway

The leading makeup trends of the season often come from the runway.  Have a favorite designer?  Find out what they are doing on the runway with beauty, and try to spin it into a way that is wearable for you.

The most important part about trying new things is to do so fearlessly.  Let your individuality come through, and your creative side come out.  Makeup is not permanent, so what better way to celebrate yourself then to test the waters with your look.
