December is the perfect time to reflect on the year that is soon to be behind us, as well as our actions and achievements. It’s great to think about all those great things we managed to do and remember everything that’s been trending and popular. Speaking of trending, we would like to give you a brief list of the most popular design trends that dominated 2017.

Cactus motifs

A couple of years ago it was all about pineapples, flamingos, and palm trees, but 2017 was all about cacti. Cacti could be seen everywhere: they were the print of choice for T-shirts, PJs, underpants, and socks, but there were also charming little cacti lamps as well as cacti candles. It’s safe to assume that there will be some other Mother-Nature-derived motif in the year before us, but as far as 2017 goes, cacti were the bomb as they even made an appearance on the runways (as seen in Jeremy Scott and Kenzo collections).

Bespoke wedding invitations

One of the things people fell in love with were bespoke cards: birthday and get-well cards you can design yourself could be seen everywhere, but it’s wedding invitations that got our attention. Bespoke illustrations, invitations made of Plexiglas, those written in golden ink on matte black cards, and those written with glow-in-the-dark ink drew everyone’s attention. Personalized wedding invitations are a great way to express yourself and to show to everyone what you and your partner are passionate about. What is more, it’s a great memorabilia the two of you, your families, and your closest friends will cherish in years to come.

Floral appliqué

It doesn’t matter how popular floral prints were, they had to step aside and let floral appliqués take the throne. It seemed like everyone owned something with a flower appliqué this year: wedding dresses, shirts, skirts, bras, pencil cases, shoes, and even fishnet stockings. You just sew or glue an additional piece fabric onto an existing piece of clothing and you get that decorative 3D effect that’s much more eye-catching than a traditional print. Romantic red flowers on pastels, colourful ones on plaid, and black on white certainly made everyone look your way.

All about them nails

Healthy, well-manicured nails are always in focus, but the year behind us treated nails as little works of art. Bling-bling nails could be seen everywhere: glitter, rhinestone, and chrome on one, two or every nail made us all see our nails as canvases and use them to bring a bit of sparkle in our lives. Sometimes it’s best to ‘bling’ just one nail, especially if you have short fingers; otherwise, you risk making your hands look cheap and over-the-top.

Mermaid hair and makeup

The year 2017 was all about mermaids – long, flowing locks in pastels and shimmery eye-shadows that made you look and feel like a mermaid covered with fairy dust. Dyeing your hair in bright, bold colours and allowing it to fade over time didn’t reduce the beauty of the look. On the contrary. Also, allowing your natural hair colour to show a bit and covering it with glitter was a trend everyone went crazy about. Dark, smokey eyes are the norm, but this year it was all about brighter and dreamier ‘mermaid eyes’ with glittery eye-shadows in different shades of purple and green.

It looks like some of these trends were rediscovered and adapted from the years before. Fashion, trends, and design in general go through different phases and often some of the things and designs that used to be popular decades ago suddenly become popular again. We look forward to 2018 and patiently wait to see what’s going to be hot next year.
