7 Hobbies To Pick Up This Summer

By  |

Everyone looks forward to the summer months whether you’re still in school and will be getting the days off, or if you work 9-5 and can head down to the beach for some long weekends. The summer is a time to spend outdoors, with family, and doing the things you love. Even though the days are no longer, they feel like it because of the lengthy beautiful weather. Summer is a time to take advantage of your unprecedented energy and desire to do new things. If you find yourself bored these coming months, pick up a new hobby and make something great of your long break.

Hiking

There’s always room for more physical activity in your life. This hobby kills two birds with one stone as it serves as exercise and a fun thing you can do either by yourself or with friends throughout the summer months. If you don’t have any good hiking spots near your house, just take up walking. There’s no doubt you can find some pretty great trails just about anywhere.

Knitting/crocheting

If you’ve always wanted to teach yourself how to make a blanket or a scarf, now is the time. Load up on some quality materials like hooks, malabrigo yarn, and even books with patterns to follow. It might be a slow start, but once you get the hang of it, you can have one of the most productive summers of your life.

Reading

Even if you haven’t been an avid reader up until this point in your life, it’s never too late to start. Some people think they hate reading and could never sit still to actually finish a book. More often then not, this common misconception comes from being forced to read books you simply didn’t like. There are so many books out there that it would be hard not to find one on a topic that you’d enjoy.

Baking

While this is an indoor activity, can’t you just picture yourself making some delicious pie with all of the kitchen windows open and a ton of natural light pouring in? Sometimes it’s just too hot to bask in the sun. On those days, why not create something in your kitchen? You can experiment with recipes and even invite the neighbors over to try them out. Another win-win!

Get a part-time or seasonal job

This one might not exactly be a hobby, but it’s definitely a way to keep you busy and make money at the same time. Unless you’re in a crunch, wait for a job that’s actually going to excite you so that you can make the most out of your summer. Maybe you want to be a lifeguard on the beach, or coach children’s sports. Whatever it may be, it’s out there.

Crafting

Somewhat similar to knitting/crocheting, you can start crafting for the fun of it, or even turn it into a small business. If you live near the beach, there are a ton of ideas you can find on Pinterest when it comes to turning beach finds into treasure. If you’re any good at it, you can consider opening a store on Etsy and who knows where that will lead!

Surfing/Swimming

What’s more beachy than hitting the waves on a hot day? Heading into the ocean can be a little intimidating if it’s your first time out there to not just float around. Consider signing up for surfing lessons and catching sound traction before heading out there alone. Wading in the water can become a very peaceful and relaxing hobby if it’s something you enjoy.  Some may think that becoming a lifeguard is more of a vacation than a job. After all, your work clothes are ideal for sun and surf.

There are a ton of things out there that you can do this summer to make it fun, productive, and exciting. The important thing is finding what makes you tick. If you’re not sure yet, try a few things out before sticking to one!
