Are You Ready To Start Making Your Own Music?

By  |

There was a time when, if you wanted to record any music, you basically had two choices. You either had to shell out money for professional studio time or create some lo-fi recordings into an old 8-track player. However, thanks to the rise of digital music technology, the ability to record professional quality music rests directly in your hands. You’re suddenly able to be the musician, engineer, and producer all in one. However, for a lot of people, it can be difficult to figure out where to start, and the whole process can seem incredibly complicated to a beginner. Fortunately, things are actually a lot simpler than you might think. All you need to do is to follow these steps to turn your home into a home studio.

Pick your instruments

Everything you record is going to need to go through an audio input device, but there’s no real limit to the number of instruments that you can record with. Of course, this is going to depend on the instruments that you play. If you’re a singer, then you need to invest in a high-quality condenser microphone. Guitarists would ideally want to use a high-quality amplifier recorded through a microphone, but you also have the option for recording directly into your computer through an audio input device. The same applies to drums since you might not have the room, or patient enough neighbours, to accommodate a full-size kit.  If you want to record drums without making too much noise, then you should try and find the best electronic drum set within your price range. Many acoustic instruments are best recorded with the same kind of microphone you would use for vocals, but there are plenty of tutorials online for matching instruments to the right kind of microphones.

Find the right software

When you’re recording music, you need something to record it into. There are a lot of different programs that you can use and which you choose will depend on a bunch of different factors including budget and hardware. Garageband is an incredibly popular piece of software for beginners since it comes free with Apple products and has a pretty gradual learning curve. However, it doesn’t really have as many options as other pieces of software. Programs like Audible and Logic are more expensive and have a steeper learning curve, but they allow you a great deal more freedom overall. Not only is there music software out there but you can also use things like Adobe Spark as an album cover generator. That way you can record and release your own music as professionally as possible.

Think about sound quality

If you’re recording music, it’s crucial that you’re able to listen to it. That means that your output needs to be as high quality as possible. Make sure that you get a pair of high-quality headphones so that you can listen carefully and make clear decisions when you’re recording and producing your music. Not only that but it’s a good idea to set up some good speakers so that you can step back and get a different perspective on the way your music sounds. Remember to listen to your music in as many different places as possible. It might sound one way in your headphones, another through your speakers, and yet another in your car stereo.

Once your music is recorded, you’re then in a position to start putting it out into the world, making waves and building a fanbase.

After you’ve tried your hand at home recording, you’ll have a pretty good idea if it’s something you want to do. If it turns out that you would rather record an album in a real studio environment but don’t have the means to do it, you can start a fundraiser for your band and rally up your fans to support you.
