Escape the Grind at these Top Beaches Around Longboat Key

By  |

If you’re visiting Longboat Key for the first time, you’ll want to escape the grind at some of the beaches in the area. Each beach offers different amenities and vibes. Get informed about the best beaches in Longboat Key and the amenities they offer, and learn how to choose the best beach for you and your family.

Coquina Beach

Coquina Beach is located within the city of Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island. It’s the longest beach on the island, covering the south end. It has a picnic area that’s shaded by tall pine trees so you can eat and relax out of the sun. The beach also provides a concession area, as well as facilities and lifeguards. The southern end is a little busier, and the northern end is quieter, so you can get a little bit of both activity and quiet. If you stay at a nearby hotel, you can simply walk to the beach or take a short drive.

Beer Can Island

You’ll find Beer Can Island at the northern end of Longboat Key, at the Longboat Pass drawbridge. Tidal currents formed this beach, so the shoreline is undeveloped. Most people travel to Beer Can Island by boat, but you can also walk to the island when the tide is low. One disadvantage is the lack of bathrooms or concessions. You’ll have to travel to South Coquina Beach and use the facilities at the concession stand, or the porta potties at the boat ramp.

Despite its name, Beer Can Island does not allow alcoholic beverages. The police cruise the island on ATVs and boats; you’ll be fined $500 if they see you with alcohol. Also not allowed are glass bottles and pets.

Manatee Beach

Those who have families or just want to be on a beach that’s more energetic will enjoy Manatee Beach. This beach has restrooms and showers. Families with young kids can take them to the playground when they’re not in the water. Lifeguards patrol the beach.  If you want to go into town to buy food, you can walk to Holmes Beach.  If you don’t want to walk, you can purchase food and drinks at the beach and enjoy it at the picnic tables.

These are just a few of the beaches travelers to Longboat Key can check out; there are many others. When considering where to go, think about what kind of beach you want to visit. Do you want to visit one in a quiet, secluded spot, or do you want one with more activity? Are you willing to walk to facilities if you need them, and do you want to be able to drink alcoholic beverages on the beach? Will your kids want to play on a playground, and do you want to be on a well-protected beach?

Answering these questions will help you figure out which beaches would be best for you. No matter which you choose, be sure to prepare appropriately. If you choose to go to Beer Can Island, for example, make sure you use the facilities first. No matter which beach you choose, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy some fun in the sun.
