Uterine fibroids are surrounded by lots of myths, the biggest one of them being that they lead to cancer. While some fibroids are indeed connected to severe illnesses, 99% of them are non-cancerous. When they are diagnosed with fibroids women start to worry and change their lifestyle due to the huge amount of misinformation available online on this condition.

Here are some of the most common myths about fibroids which might prevent you from living a normal life.

Fibroids are cancerous tumors

According to Viva Eve fibroids experts, less than 0.01% of all fibroids are cancerous. Suffering from this condition, which is highly common, doesn’t mean you will develop cancer. The truth is there are specific factors which make you prone to endometrial cancer, but fibroids are not one of them, nor are they responsible for cancerous tissue.

Fibroids prevent you from becoming pregnant

Fibroids might prevent you from becoming pregnant, if they are very large or located in a specific area. But this problem is rare and most women don’t even know they have fibroids, unless they undergo medical checkups which can detect them.

Fibroids can only prevent you from becoming pregnant if they line the interior of the uterus in such way the egg can’t be implanted. Another situation when the fibroids might lead to miscarriages is when the fibroids are very large and located on the cervix or near the fallopian tubes. All in one, having fibroids is not an obstacle in front of conceiving.

Hysterectomy is mandatory if you have fibroids

Surgery is not your only option if your doctor decides you need to treat the fibroids. Moreover, hysterectomy is only discussed in the most severe cases, when all the alternative treatments have failed. Fibroids symptoms can be addressed with medicine and other non-surgical procedures.

If the doctor does advice on surgery to remove the fibroids, hysterectomy is not the only option, as there are many more options which allow you to keep your uterus.

Heavy menses are a sign of fibroids

Studies reveal that up to 80% of all women who suffer from fibroids don’t experience any specific symptom at all. If the condition remains undetected, the woman is not going to receive any treatment for it. While the symptoms of fibroids include heavy menstrual flow, this doesn’t mean that if your flow is heavier than the average you do have fibroids. Each woman is different and some of us have a heavier flow. You should only worry if you need to use more than one pad during two hours. However, your heavy flow might be caused by a large number of other conditions, so the only one who can diagnose you is the ob-gyn.

Excessive pain during period is also linked to fibroids, but it’s not necessarily a symptom of this condition.

Fibroids grow forever

Fibroids are influenced by hormones and their growth is directly controlled by the amount of estrogen and progesterone in your body. This is why they grow during pregnancy and they stop growing after menopause.

Before you start worrying about your life after being diagnosed with fibroids or worry for your heavy monthly flow, thinking it is a sign of fibroids, you need to check with your doctor. They can tell you the truth about your condition and decide together with you what to do next.
