Auto Touring in California

The United States is one of the best countries in the world if you want to experience a road trip. Moreso, there is something about the freedom of getting in your car and heading out that makes it so American. During the late 1910s, future president Dwight D. Eisenhower was part of an envoy that took part in a cross-country road trip to gain an understanding on the state of the roads connecting the country. This experience impacted Ike’s life and would be foundational to the future investments toward roads and the American Interstate Highway System. Today, Americans enjoy the liberty of moving freely, and one of the places that is a must on the auto touring list is California.

The Pacific Coast Highway

Before venturing out, make sure to prepare for the trip. You may come across areas where you want to stop for a while, take pictures, and relax, as you enjoy the scenery. Therefore, make sure to pack drinks, some snacks, and a blanket for a possible picnic. Also, keep that smartphone charged or drive to one of the many AT&T stores in California to pick up charging accessories. This will ensure that you have the needed battery power to fuel the fantastic pictures and video that the PCH will provide.

California has it all. Visitors can enjoy the scenes of a desert drive or the stunning mountain views of the Sierra Nevadas. Start by driving along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). Also known as Highway 1, this freeway stretches from San Francisco to Los Angeles and must be experienced. The scenery is simply breathtaking. The route is famous features frequently in movies, television shows, and commercials. However, much of its beauty is based on the contrasting and changing landscapes of tiny towns, large metropolitan areas, classic beaches, Colonial Spanish sites, state parks, and the unforgettable Redwood Forest.

Yosemite National Park

The roads in Yosemite National Park are stunning and provide some of the most magnificent views in the country. Among these is the famous Tioga Road, which is a 39-mile stretch from Crane Flat to the Tioga Pass. The road typically closes during the winter months, so make sure to plan ahead. However, it will generally be open May through November. The most popular route is the Yosemite Valley Loop, which offers amazing landscapes but is generally more crowded than the others. Wowona Road has access to some of the park’s best hiking trails, so it is a great path to take to stretch your legs and walk. During the spring, travelers driving through El Portal Road can enjoy the sights of wildflowers in bloom. If you have some more time, it is highly advisable to park and go rafting. If history is your thing, then you won’t want to miss Highway 49. This road covers 100 miles along the route of the Gold Rush and passes historic mining towns along the way.

The Stops

While driving along the coast, some of the towns are must-see places. San Luis Obispo, for example, is a historic town with many activities, including horseback riding, hiking, zip lining, and surfing. The town is sure to slow you down and force you to enjoy the weather as you ramble through the downtown area. Afterward, hop on the car and head to Morro Bay. This small town has a waterfront boardwalk to the Morro Rock that is over 500 feet. This iconic landmark presents a great picture opportunity, especially at sunset. You can also enjoy the wildlife as the area is a popular spot for sea otters and other animals. Once ready, head to Cayucos, where surfing and ranching are a way of life. This is a great spot to stop and purchase some beach-themed art and try some of the world-famous smoked salmon.  As you do so, you will notice that time will never be enough. Simply put, auto touring in California is a guaranteed adventure.
