By  |

2018 is coming to a close and it’s time to make your first decision for the new year: what to do on NYE. Every year presents you with a fresh opportunity to start with a bang, but it’s up to you to make that happen. Having a world of options can make this decision daunting, so we’ve narrowed it down for you with our top three (starting with the best!).

  1. Melbourne, Australia

One of the world’s most liveable cities, yet an oft-overlooked destination, Melbourne’s earned its spot because it’s actually home to hundreds of different NYE celebrations. Serviced apartments in Melbourne are easy to come by, not to mention conveniently located in the heart of the city, so accommodation is also no big issue. You can head right out your door and find yourself in a world-class restaurant, or a specialty bar, or a charming café, or a because there’s no limit to what you can unearth in amongst the city’s famous hidden laneways and rooftops. And every hidden gem will be hosting their own personal NYE celebration, all culminating in the city’s annual countdown and fireworks display above the Yarra River. This display is so fantastically broad that it can truly be admired from anywhere across the city’s central business district, though the most magical place – aside from the aforementioned rooftop hideaways – would most definitely have to be the banks of the Yarra itself. Grab a picnic blanket, or even hire a boat and float along and enjoy the lights and liveliness of Australia’s most stylish city.

  1. Berlin, Germany

Whilst Melbourne’s celebrations are like an intricate tapestry, NYE (or Silvester) in Berlin is all-out mayhem in the greatest way possible: an almost worldwide street party. Berlin’s annual NYE party kicks off every year between Brandenburg Gate and Victory Column, where hundreds of thousands of people from all areas of the world come together and party hard into the new year. This mega-celebration is easy to reach through the city’s impeccable public transportation system, which runs multiple services to and from the event all night. The festivities are also all completely free, and the entertainment never disappoints, with a perfectly-balanced lineup consisting of DJs, live bands, and a variety of artists running from around 7pm till 3 in the morning. Berlin’s fireworks display is also considered to be one of the greatest in the world, and although it is broadcasted across the global, this celebration is a must-add to your bucket list.

  1. Koh Pha Ngan, Thailand

This name might be familiar to those of you who have attended one of Koh Pha Ngan’s otherworldly Full Moon parties. Well, if you haven’t, there has never been a better time to do so! Whilst the rest of the world parties exclusively through the night on the first day of the year alone, Koh Pha Ngan beats us by twelve whole night-long shindigs. Yes, these Full Moon parties are a monthly event where locals and tourists pay homage to the glorious sight of the full moon above the waves by dancing until its departure. What’s more fantastic is that this Thai haven’s next Full Moon party will be scheduled right before Christmas, so treat yourself to a vacation in paradise with well over a week’s worth of intense celebrations. And when the partying eventually does die down, you can start your new year with a peaceful dawn swim in the crystal clear waters of Thailand’s fifth largest island.

Choosing out of these three quality NYE getaways will ensure that your next fresh opportunity will be exactly that: fresh. Set 2019 up to be the year of adventure, of life well-lived, and of positive energy.
