When the new year comes around a lot of people make New Year’s resolutions. The majority of the time, that resolution will be related to weight and health, such as losing weight or starting a new sport. Taking care of your health is important, which is why these kinds of resolutions can be a great choice to make.
However, when starting a new sport there are a few things to bear in mind before you just rush in and get going. Here are a few things to look into before you start on your new path for 2019 and achieve a greater level of health and fitness.
Be mindful of yourself
When choosing a new sport it is best to choose one that you know about and enjoy. Don’t just pick any old sport, if there is a sport that you already have the skills for and a passion for, then you might want to consider choosing that option. Or, think about any sports you have always wanted to try after watching others play or ones that you’ve seen on the TV.
Get all the right gear
Before you take part in a new sport, you will need to make sure you have all the correct clothing and equipment to take part. So if, for example, it is an indoor sport then you will need indoor shoes, such as running trainers or Astro trainers. If it is lacrosse you are going to be playing you will need men’s or a women’s lacrosse cleats, if it is football then you will need football boots and shin pads.
There are many sites that can assist with finding the best gear for your sport such as providing great shoe advice or tips about what clothing to wear. Finding the right equipment isn’t about just looking the part, you will usually need this for safety reasons so try to pick clothing and equipment suitable for the sport that you will be playing.
Know that practice makes perfect
When first starting a new sport, the chances are you won’t be as amazing as you would like. However, it’s important to give yourself time to improve your skills for a new sport. The key to success is to make sure that you have given yourself time to hone your skills – the more time you can sink into practice, the better.
The last thing you want to do is sink money and time into something only to just give it up, this is why picking the right sport is important but also making sure you are motivating yourself to practice and get better. Remember you don’t have to just wait till training days with the club you may have joined, take it upon yourself to practice in your free time so you can catch up with others you are playing with and not feel discouraged.
When picking a new sport just remember that it isn’t going to happen overnight. You need to make sure you are able to commit to it and most of all you are going to enjoy it. Starting a new sport is meant to be fun so ultimately if you are not having fun then it is best not to continue. If you follow these tips then you will be set up and ready to start your new sports journey.
