Tips for Creatives: How to Not Let Your Mate’s Energy Affect You

By  |

Togetherness with your mate is great, but when it throws off your creative energy or your spirit flow, it may be necessary to step out of that space, at least for a bit. Stepping away is majorly important, especially if your livelihood is being affected. Here are a few ways to either correct that energy or step away without unnecessarily hurting your loved one’s feelings.

So you had a bad day

Say your mate has had a bad day which has now spilled over into the home life (believe me, it happens). Let them vent for a few minutes. If getting it out doesn’t help, try to switch up the mood by talking about a lighter subject. Not only can this lift their spirits, but it frees you up to move on to what you need to get accomplished. If this doesn’t work, then don’t drain yourself dry, because remember, you’ve got to maintain your positive mindset to get things done. Simply acknowledge their statements, offer words of encouragement, and excuse yourself to the office. Also, to ensure you’re not disturbed, politely make it known you have work to finish up, or deadlines to meet.  Handling this in this manner helps your significant other feel as if you listened, heard them and they don’t feel brushed aside.

Anywhere but here

No office? No problem. Not all of us have the luxury of a separate office space to disappear into for the sake of peace and quiet. If that’s the case, there may be times you just have to say, “Hey babe I’m going to go to the Barnes and Noble to work on some things.”, or “I’m going to meet with a creatives group to bounce some ideas around.”. It may seem like a lot of bobbing and weaving, but there will be moments when you need to preserve your creative energy. Remaining in an environment where negative energy is festering affects your productivity, and you cannot have that. You have goals to achieve, and you must stay the course, besides the separation is only for the moment. Once you’ve completed your agenda for the day, you will be free to give your mate as much attention as you’d like.

Creative = Sensitive

Perhaps your soulmate may not always “get” the creative side of you and may not always show as much support as you may need. When this is the situation, it may seem like a negative environment simply, because you do not feel supported.  Believe it or not this can affect you more than your mate simply being in a bad mood. Why you ask? Because we’re creatives. We are sensitive, this is now about you, and that undoubtedly makes it feel more significant. Removing yourself in this instance is most important for a couple of reasons. One reason is because you don’t need to get in your own head, about why you feel you’re not getting the support you need. Again, we creatives are sensitive. Focus on your goals for today, and if this has been a repetitive issue, address this another time. A second reason is you and your significant other are different people, and that’s not a bad thing. Your energy and your drive are what makes you who you are. Whether you have a full-fledged cheering squad in full pom poms cheering you on, or just the “You can do it!” guy from the Sandler movies, you continue to press on, and that’s most likely one of the things your mate loves most about you.
