3 Pros and Cons of Each Decision: Should You Rent a Bike or Just Buy Your Own?

By  |

For motorcycle lovers, getting the chance to ride a motorcycle each year is important. But do you really need to own it? Bike rentals are becoming a popular option for bike lovers everywhere and it is easy to see why. They give you all the fun of riding a bike without any of the hassle and cost owners face.

Bikes on rent are taking a larger share of motorcycle enthusiasts, but some still believe owning their bike is the only way to go. Here are some pros and cons of each decision so you have all the information available before you make a decision of whether to rent or own your motorcycle.

The Pros of Renting

There are several pros of renting your motorbike, and depending on your needs, these will play a larger or smaller role in your decision of whether to buy or rent.

Firstly, the wet season brings heavy rain and less than ideal riding conditions. Many riders opt to lock up their motorcycle during monsoon season, often invoking storage costs. With a rental, riders can ride their bike in the dry months, and simply return it when the rains begin. There are no storage worries or added costs.

There are also reduced maintenance costs. You are not financially responsible for the yearly service, or repairs carried out on the vehicle. All you have to pay for is your petrol and the rental. The rest is included in the rental price. This means no unforeseen expenditures and unexpected out of pocket expenses.

Finally, many petrolheads are drawn to renting because it means they enjoy the flexibility associated with renting a bike. If they like the bike, they can rent it again. If they don’t, they can try something different the following month. It is an excellent way to drive a lot of different bikes and see what is out there.

The Cons

While many simply enjoy the ride, some enthusiasts like getting their hands dirty and working on the bike themselves. This is not something you can do with a rental bike. You can’t make your own vehicle adjustments or tweak the engine. For these kinds of petrolheads, an owned bike will not give the same type of pleasure as owning your own.

There is also less on an emotional connection to the bike when you rent. You don’t feel a sense of ownership and attachment in quite the same way. For people that just want to have fun and aren’t looking for a hobby or something to take pride in, this is fine, but for others, this may obstruct the fun of being on a motorcycle.

Finally, rental options are by no means exhaustive and there is no guarantee your renter will have the specific bike you want. If you have your heart set on a particular bike, you may have to spring the added cost and purchase it. But for people looking to try something different, or explore the market, the rental market is a wealth of opportunities waiting to be tapped.
