Things to See and Do in Sussex

Located in the far southeast corner of England, Sussex has a lot of history. There is evidence of human habitation in the region going back as far as 500,000 years, and some of the world’s oldest fossils and tools have been found there.

The area has been crucial to British history ever since the Bronze Age, and if you love history, you can’t do better than a trip to Sussex (even if you aren’t a history buff, there is plenty to do). We’ve rounded up just some of the unique activities Sussex has to offer visitors.

Wings Museum

The Wings Museum is a World War II aircraft museum with a unique twist. While most aircraft museums showcase planes in restored glory, this one offers wrecks on display, with information about the crashes and sites from which they were salvaged.

The museum is run entirely by dedicated volunteers, and they have done their best to recreate the crash sites as accurately as possible. The gift shop offers you the chance to buy actual parts of planes or bullets recovered from the crash sites. Each is accompanied by certificates of authentication.

Bluebell Railway

The Bluebell Railway offers you a chance to explore Sussex’s train history with a ride on an authentic 1950s train. While on board, you can enjoy a sumptuous meal based on seasonal offerings, and your meal is followed up with coffee and tea.

The entire journey takes just under two hours. Along the way, you’ll see everything the beautiful Sussex countryside has to offer. You can even bring along your dog most of the year, though dogs can’t come along to certain special events.

Drusillas Park Zoo

The Drusillas Park Zoo is a great place to visit with the whole family. This is one of the top rated children’s outings in the country, and the whole environment is designed to make sure your children have the time of their lives.

There are plenty of animals to watch, but there are also lots of playtime activities for the kids. Let your kids go wild at one of two fun and intriguing playgrounds, or let them cool off at the water park. There is also an Amazon adventure, a maze, and plenty of other activities to keep them busy for the whole day.

Fishers Adventure Farm Park

Fishers Adventure Farm Park is a beloved family outing in the region. The park features an animal encounters barn where kids and adults can interact with goats, lambs, chicks, horses, sheep, chicks, pigs, cows, and other animals. When you get tired of petting the animals, cool off with the Splash Attack water jets or get your adrenaline rushing at the Sky Fall adventure.

There are plenty of other things to do at the park, and when you’re hungry, the Saddle Rooms Restaurant is a great place to enjoy both adult food and child-friendly fare. Whether you want a full lunch or just some cake and tea, the park is a great place for everyone.

Arundel Cathedral

This ancient Roman Catholic cathedral overlooks the historic town of Arundel. The current building was commissioned by the Duke of Norfolk in 1868 and was designed by Joseph Hansom. The original building was dedicated in the early sixteenth century.

The cathedral itself is well worth exploring, and it would be hard to find a better view anywhere else in the region. As you climb up the hill toward the cathedral itself, you will walk through streets almost unchanged from medieval times.
