6 Telltale Signs and Symptoms of Addiction

By  |

Addiction is a powerful force that has the power to ruin or even end someone’s life. But too often, it goes unnoticed. Addicts can become extremely adept at hiding their addiction from everyone around them until it is too late.

It can be hard sometimes to tell if someone in your life has an addiction. But there are a few telltale signs you can watch out for if you’re concerned. Read on to learn about some of the common symptoms of addiction.

Loss of Control

One of the primary tenets of addiction is an inability to control use of the substance. If you’re concerned a loved one may have an addiction, watch for a difference in what they say and what they do. If they often start the night saying they’ll only have one or two drinks and then wind up having six or seven, there may be a problem.

Increased Time Spent

Because of the loss of control, addicts will often wind up spending more and more time using their drug of choice. You may notice them start making excuses not to spend time with friends or family more often. Keep an eye on how many nights a week they use the drug of their choice, even if it appears casual.

Ignoring Important Activities

One of the other big hallmarks of addiction is an interference with the life of the addict. They may start calling in sick to work more often or missing important family activities. They will make excuses for this behavior, but watch for a pattern forming.

Changes in Mood, Motivation, and Body

Addiction changes a person; the things that used to matter to them – family, work, hobbies – become eclipsed by their drug. And drugs have a noticeable effect on the body. If a person suddenly gains or loses weight and seems more irritable, they might be battling an addiction.

Lying and Keeping Secrets

When someone you love has an addiction, you want to talk to them about it, but often they don’t want to hear what you’re saying. They start lying about their using habits and becoming more secretive and withdrawn. Combined with some of the other tells on this list, secrecy could be indicative of an addiction.

Damaged Relationships

One of the most tragic things about addiction is the damage it wreaks on relationships. Marriages fail, parents and children become alienated, and friends fall apart. If someone in your life seems almost to be sabotaging their relationships, it may be time to learn more about addiction treatment.
