Taking Fashion Inspiration From The Stage

By  |

Every now and then it’s not uncommon for you to go through a phase of feeling totally uninspired by fashion. You go to the shops, and you can’t find anything, everything’s so dull, everyone is so boring, and there doesn’t seem to be anything grabbing your attention and making you feel excited. Aside from flicking through magazines, window shopping, and scrolling through Pinterest, there is somewhere else you might find inspiration and a new lease of life for your wardrobe, and that’s in the theatre. Take inspiration from someone like stylist to artists and musicians, Akua Murray Adoboe, who is a hair and costume stylist on theatre productions, films, and music videos.

Down at the West End or on Broadway you will find a number of strong outfits that aren’t just for models on the catwalk, you can pull them off too and for any occasion, whether you want to go back in time and dress like you’ve just stepped out off stage from  The Great Gatsby. Showing off your figure in a sparkly number or looking dapper a sharp suit, or you want to douse yourself in tartan and embrace your inner child and be part of the band taking inspiration from School of Rock, the theatre has it all!

Take some style tips from the eighties and Mama Mia, and throw on your platform boots and your brightest colors. By day, it’s all about flowy clothing that will blow in the island breezes; we’re talking kaftans and palazzo pants, and by night, you want to channel your inner Donna and the Diamonds by wearing a pair of ruffled trousers.

Chicago’s another amazing production which if you take some style tips from you’ll be feeling sexier than ever. Show a bit of skin and cover up the rest with some mesh or fishnet tights. Get yourself a black bowler hat too, and a fitted blazer and you’re good to go.

One of the biggest shows on the West End and Broadway right now is Hamilton, and if you want to follow Thomas Jefferson’s style, then you’ll definitely stand out. Layering burgundy pieces, the color blocking here is simple yet creates a striking outfit. If you want to step into Alexander Hamilton’s shoes, then go for a black leather boot, perfect for both men and women.

If you want something a little more glam and want to be dripping in Diamonds, then the Dreamgirls style is the one for you.  Pull out your glitziest prom-style dress to smash this look, if you have any gold then even better. Or you could opt for a more fiery approach with a red skirt and thigh-high slits and for that final touch, slip on a feather boa. Finally, if you want to get mysterious then go for the Phantom of The Opera look, a black trench coat or mac will do or if you want to adapt the purity of Christine, then any white dress will capture her innocence especially one with ruffles.
