By  |

Are you looking to bring a bit of the tropical lifestyle to your home? We tell you about four native Florida plants that are stunning AND easy-to-grow here!

Indoor plants don’t just make your home look nicer. They also come with a lot of health benefits.  Indoor plants can help to purify your air, boost your immune system, and improve your mental health. What if you’re not good at keeping plants alive, though? If you don’t have a green thumb, you can still reap all the benefits of indoor plants. You just have to choose the right ones. For example, if you’re a Floridian, consider starting with plants native to Florida.

Listed below are four of the best native Florida plants you ought to consider growing.

1. Oyster Plant

The Oyster Plant, which is sometimes referred to as Moses-in-the-Cradle, is a great option for first-time plant parents. This plant grows well indoors and outdoors. It needs regular water to thrive, but it doesn’t require a lot of other maintenance. Oyster Plants look great displayed on tabletops, desks, kitchen counters, and bedroom end-tables. They’re small, low plants, so they don’t take up a ton of space but will still add character to any room.

2. Jacobinia

Jacobinia is also known as Justicia or Brazilian Plume. This is a tropical flowering shrub that blooms with stunning pink and white flowers that resemble fireworks. This plant grows very well in Southern Florida and other tropical areas. It’s even popular in the north as a container gardening plant because it’s low-maintenance and produces beautiful flowers. This plant can grow indoors in a pot at first, as long as it gets adequate sunlight and water. Eventually, though, you may need to move it outside for it to continue growing.

3. Snake Plant

The Snake Plant grows in the wild in Florida and Hawaii. It’s originally native to west and southern parts of Africa, though. This is one of the easiest houseplants to maintain. It doesn’t need a lot of light or water, so it’s perfect for those who have a tendency to forget about their houseplants. As long as it gets some attention every once in a while, it ought to thrive and purify the air in your home with no issues.

4. White Bird of Paradise

White Bird of Paradise is a very popular plant among interior designers. It has a stunning appearance with long, dramatic leaves and an ability to grow to great heights. This plant helps add a tropical element to any home and can survive inside or outside. Keep in mind, though, that it doesn’t bloom when kept inside. It looks more than fine with just the green leaves, and many people even prefer it that way. That being said, if you want to see the blossoms, you’ll move it outdoors.

If you’re worried about your ability to keep plants alive, starting with native Florida plants might be a good solution. In most cases, it’s easier to keep plants alive that are native to your area compared to plants that come from a place with a different climate.  Are you looking for more plant-growing advice?
