3 Tips For Storing Prescribed Medication

By  |

Over 100 million people take prescribed medications, but how these medications should be stored is not a particularly commonly-discussed topic. In an effort to address this discrepancy, here are three tips to keep in mind…

#1 – Keep the medication information leaflet with the medication

It’s not uncommon for people to discard the information leaflet for their medication, but this leaflet provides crucial information that you may need to refer to at some point in the future. It’s therefore worth keeping the leaflet with the medication; stapling it to the box is very effective. For medications that are supplied in bottles, you could fold the leaflet and store it inside, or use a rubber band to bind the bottle and leaflet together.

#2 – Focus on security

As the infographic below demonstrates, prescription medications such as Adderall can potentially be abused, so always make sure that all medications are stored as securely as possible. A locking cabinet is usually the preferred choice for storing medications at home. If you regularly need to carry medication while travelling, consider using a pill dispenser that can be locked.

#3 – Choose the right storage conditions

All medications should be stored in an area that is cool, dry, and dark, as heat, moisture, and light can all damage medications and render them ineffective. A cabinet, as mentioned above, can help to provide the right conditions to an extent, but where you place this cabinet is also important – the bathroom can be problematic due to moisture, and kitchens can cause problems with heat. As a result, hanging the cabinet in your bedroom – at a height that cannot be accessed by kids – can be a good choice.
