3 Top Summer Fishing Vacations Your Family Will Love

By  |

It probably won’t surprise you to hear that fishing is one of America’s favorite pastimes. In fact, about 50 million people a year are said to have participated in it. If you’re one of them, you might even dream of taking the whole family out on an excursion.

You’d probably like them to experience the same joy you feel every time a big mouth bass tugs at your line, or every time you see the serenity of the open waters. You might even be one of the many fishermen who loves to immerse yourself in the whole camping experience. No matter what type of adventure you’re after, you’re sure to find one below that everyone will enjoy.

Homer, Alaska

If scenic views and plentiful wildlife are what you’re after, you can’t go wrong with a fishing trip to Alaska. This is especially true if you’re ready to escape from the hectic lifestyle of urban living. Out here, you’ll find beautiful vistas, clear blue water, and snow-capped mountains.

And depending on where you cast your line, you’ll have your pick of various types of fish. Boat over to the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon for king and silver salmon. Or visit one of the other areas, such as Kachemak Bay or Cook Inlet for rockfish and lingcod. But no matter where you go, keep in mind that Homer is well-known as the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World,” so don’t leave without snagging one.

The great thing about going to Homer for a fishing trip is that the whole community is immersed in fishing culture. That’s because it’s their primary source of revenue. So, you’ll get to see commercial fishing boats unloading large amounts of fish and rows upon rows of vessels lining the docks. In fact, many of them are fishing charters that make up another source of fishing income, and this is the best way for tourists to explore the area.

Branson, Missouri

Branson might be best known for its country music culture, but it’s also one of the best places for fishing vacations you’ll ever find. Situated in the heart of the Ozarks, the area is home to Table Rock Lake, Lake Taneycomo, and a number of other bodies of water.

Bass fishing is the most common activity here. You’ll likely even run across a group or two participating in annual tournaments at certain times of the year. Largemouth and plump spotted bass are the breeds you’ll see the most. And you can either fish the shorelines yourself or hire a charter to take you out exploring.

Lake Durant, New York

Lake Durant is a breathtakingly beautiful small lake situated in the Adirondacks in northern New York. The area is a prime fishing spot for largemouth bass, pike, and tiger muskie. Plus, it’s a perfect site for hiking and camping.

Fishing at Lake Durant is best done in the early morning or late evening hours, and there are many ways to enjoy the trip. The marina offers canoes and kayak rentals so you can paddle across to one of the nearby islands. Or you can simply walk out to the shore and cast a line.

During the hotter hours of the day when the fish aren’t biting as well, you and your family can explore the area and take in the sights. One of the most popular tourist activities is seaplane tours. These planes pull in at the beach and take passengers over the Adirondacks to see the beautiful views.

You can also pop into the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts on a day you’re craving some indoor activity. This museum displays art from local vendors and even hosts live music events on occasion.
