A Woman’s Guide to Killing It on Halloween

By  |

Halloween is a great holiday. At what other time of year is it socially acceptable to dress up in a crazy outfit and eat candy all night? This year’s Halloween could be your best one yet, because you are finally going to get the perfect costume for the occasion.

Halloween may be spooky, but finding the ideal costume shouldn’t be a frightening task. Never fear: We’re here with some helpful tips for women who want to step up their costume game this Halloween.

Start early

Nothing is worse than realizing the day before Halloween that you don’t have a decent costume. By then, the party and costume shops will be stripped bare and the good ideas will have been reserved by your friends. You’ll be stuck scrambling for a cheap DIY costume, and you might end up wearing something that’s memorable in all the wrong ways.

Do yourself a favor this Halloween, and start thinking about the perfect costume well ahead of time. You’ll find that costumes are more affordable when it’s not the height of costume shopping season, and you’ll have way more time to plan and pick out the perfect one for you.

Beware of that viral joke

A great joke or reference can make a hilarious Halloween costume. The problem, though, is that a viral joke or newsworthy event is, by definition, something that lots of people are aware of. A glance at referential costumes from years past will quickly prove two things. First, the jokes don’t age well. Second, everyone has already seen tons of these costumes on Halloween. Everyone seemed to have had the same idea.

If you have something truly unique, howver, think about a few factors that will make some of these costumes more popular than others. If the reference is to something that happened in the months just before Halloween, you can expect to see a lot more of your costume-twins than you would if you dressed up as something from May or June. If the costume is easy, expect a lot of competition. Definitely don’t make light of tragic news stories or make viral jokes that are offensive.

Get sexy

You don’t have to wear a sexy Halloween costume this year. You can, though, and that’s very liberating! Sexy Halloween costumes are a time-honored tradition for a reason, and it’s hard to go wrong with a costume that shows off your best features. Traditional sexy costumes (like sexy black cats and sexy witches) are foolproof options that will make you look and feel great. If those are too obvious for you, you can always do an unusual costume that winks at the silliness of sexy getups: A sexy Patrick Starr (from Spongebob) or a sexy muppet lets you show off while also showing that you’re in on the joke. Luckily, it’s easy to poke fun at over-the-top sexy costumes while also wearing one.

Whatever you choose to do, remember that this is Halloween! You have a license to embrace whatever makes you feel sexy and brings you joy. Don’t let any naysayers tell you different.

Team up

Worried about your costume choice? You shouldn’t be, but we get it: Halloween can feel like a high-stakes day for dressing, even though it’s such a silly night. If you’re concerned about your look, seek strength in numbers. A group costume is an awesome way to make sure that you’re never alone in your choice of dress, and it’s also an awesome way to bond with your friends. Just make sure that you don’t choose a group costume that will stop making sense without all of its parts. You don’t want your costume to be confusing if you’re the last one still at the bar on Halloween night!
