SHER: A Sisterhood of Resilience

SHER Brings Women Together to Survive and Thrive

It’s probably the height of understatement to say that support and encouragement in the face adversity is sorely needed these days. Women in particular face challenges that differ greatly from their male counterparts, who themselves are limited by their own experience in their ability to provide the fully effective support that women need. Often, it is in the company of diverse women of varied backgrounds and with different stories, that women can find that nurturing, yet emboldening strength.

It’s in this capacity that SHER Group is both impactful and unique. SHER (celebrating She & Her) is an organization that fills this unique need for women. Founded by Anzhelika Steen-Olsen, SHER held its most recent event on July 29, 2019 at Serendipity 3 on Manhattan’s East Side boasting a strong selection of inspiring speakers and attendees.

In her address to the nearly fifty, invitation-only gathering of women, Steen-Olsen summed up the objectives of the event.

“Through our shared strength and in community, we can feel less alone, less likely to ever give up, and more able to meet any challenge,” she said. “Sometimes we have a choice and then we want to explore it to the fullest. Sometimes we have no choice and we must do what we need to do in order to survive another day”

Among the highlighted speakers was Mendy Rokosh, Global CMO of Havas Health & You, who’s clients include the NHL, Disney, Revlon, and Walmart.

“Keep your eye on the big picture and your long-term goals,” Rokosh said in her address. “There will always be fluctuations in the short term, but I try to keep building every moment of every day with my long-term vision in mind.”

While the objective of SHER is for women to uplift and support women with “Asks” for things they need, and “Shers” to tell women how they overcame their obstacles, for the first time there was some male support for the event as well, most notably Kevin Weekes, former NHL player and current studio analyst on the NHL Network, Marvin Washington, Super Bowl champion with the Denver Broncos, and Richard “Big Daddy” Salgado, President and CEO of Coastal Advisors LLC Insurance Consultants, both of whom had the opportunity to address the audience.

Serendipity 3 was a sponsor of the event as well as functioning as host location. Other sponsors included Lancôme, courtesy of the event hostess Elizabeth B Zebrowski, The1Wine and the Tourette Association of America, which was represented by their CEO Amanda Talty, and among the speakers by way of its Youth Ambassador, Amanda Lily.

“SHER is a wonderful means for women to share their stories of struggles and success,” Steen-Olsen explains. “It’s both a safe place and a playground where women from all walks of life can find comfort, companionship, support, and encouragement so they don’t just survive. They can thrive.”
