What Exactly Is Astrology?

Astrology is an area of study of how the sun, moon, and stars move, and how that movement affects our world.

This study’s been around ever since 3rd millennium BC in Indo-Europe. Because they’re so closely related to one another, much of astrology has helped develop early astronomy.

Astrology was so important in early history that the findings were applied to other studies, such as meteorology, medicine, and alchemy.

The Signs

If you’ve ever looked up a newspaper horoscope, chances are, you already know which astrological sign you are. But what about the others?

Below are the signs and the range of birthdates:

  • Aries: March 21 – April 19
  • Taurus: April 20 – May 20
  • Gemini: May 21 – June 20
  • Cancer: June 21 – July 22
  • Leo: July 23 – August 22
  • Virgo: August 23 – September 22
  • Libra: September 23 – October 22
  • Scorpio: October 23 – November 21
  • Sagittarius: November 22 – December 21
  • Capricorn: December 22 – January 19
  • Aquarius: January 20 – February 18
  • Pisces: February 19 – March 20

Depending on the sign you were born under, you may have some typical traits. For example, those who are Tauruses tend to be stubborn and practical. Or, if you’re a Gemini, you may be extroverted and whimsical.

Of course, there are many other things that may influence your personality and lifestyle. Keep reading to find out what they are.

The Elements

Not only are people divided up into different astrological signs by birthdate, but there are also 4 different elements that rule over certain signs. They are fire, water, air, and earth.

Here’s where each sign falls into:

  • Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
  • Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
  • Air: Gemini, Aquarius, Libra
  • Earth: Taurus, Capricorn, Virgo

Each of these elements influences how your personality’s like.

Fire Personalities

Just like a flicker of flame, people who fall under the fire element are hot-headed. So it’s not a surprise that they’re extremely passionate and will voice their opinions. They’re not ones to stand on the sidelines meekly.

Water Personalities

People with water signs are very altruistic. Like a flowing river, they have depth; they’re sensitive and intuitive. Not only are they in tune with their emotions, but they also are in tune with the emotions of others.

Air Personalities

Don’t think that people with air signs are air-headed! In fact, they’re great leaders and excellent at communication. They’re very expressive and may not stick to one idea for very long.

Earth Personalities

People with earth signs are very grounded. They tend to be stubborn, but also practical and pragmatic.

The Planets

Have you ever heard someone blame something on “mercury being in retrograde?” This has to do with astrology!

As the planets are constantly on the move, they can affect your life if they start doing something out of the norm, such as move in retrograde (backwards).

The planets are placed into 3 categories: inner, outer, and social.

Inner Planets

The inner planets consist of Mercury, Venus, and Mars. These 3 planets are the closest to Earth, and can determine your personality, plus what you want and need.

Here’s what each one is associated with:

  • Mercury: Communication
  • Venus: Love
  • Mars: Energy and action

Outer Planets

The outer planets are the ones with the longest paths of orbit. Since they’re in place for longer, these are associated with generational attributes. The 3 here are Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

Here’s what each one is associated with:

  • Uranus: Change
  • Neptune: Dreams and ambitions
  • Pluto: Power

Social Planets

The orbits of these planets fall right in between the inner and outer planets. These involve Jupiter and Saturn; they tell you how people view you.

Here’s what these planets represent:

  • Jupiter: Growth, wisdom, luck
  • Saturn: Fears, challenges, boundaries

The Houses

You wouldn’t have thought it, but astrology gets even more detailed! Not only does your horoscope depend on what date you were born on, and what elements and planets are associated, but also what time and place you’re born.

There are a total of 12 Houses and they’re based on the 24-hour day of Earth.

Each House represents something different. Here are what they are:

  • House 1: Self
  • House 2: Money
  • House 3: Communication
  • House 4: Family
  • House 5: Creativity
  • House 6: Work and health
  • House 7: Marriage and/or long-term relationships
  • House 8: Sexuality
  • House 9: Philosophy
  • House 10: Careers
  • House 11: Dreams and/or ambitions
  • House 12: Subconscious

We won’t go into detail about how to determine which planets fall in which Houses to determine your birth chart. But do know that it’ll influence your personality. This is why even if you’re a Taurus, you may not be the typical “stubborn bull.”

The Aspects

Aspects are how planets interact with one another. Essentially, this determines your fate.

Here are some of the main aspects:

  • 0° (conjunction): This means the planets work together; it’s not necessarily a good thing.
  • 60° (sextile): This is also where the planets work well together. In your case, this is good.
  • 90° (square): This isn’t a harmonious aspect; you’ll have to work hard to realize your achievements.
  • 120° (trine): This is the best aspect possible; everything will flow easily. However, you may take it for granted and get lazy.
  • 180° (opposition): This is a difficult aspect, but each side balances the other. Without cooperation, things will fall apart.
