5 Tips To Tackle A Long Distance House Move

By  |

Moving house can be stressful at the best of times, even if your move is only taking you across down the road or across town. Long-distance moves are a whole other ball game and require even more planning to ensure they run smoothly. So whether you’re traveling interstate or to another country here are five tips to help you tackle a long-distance house move.

  1. Determine your moving budget
Before you get too stuck into planning your house move you need to sit down and decide how much money you have to spend, as this will determine many of the decisions you need to make in the later stages of the planning process. A long-distance move is always going to be more costly but there are options out there that can make it cheaper such as doing some of the move yourselves.

  2. Create a moving calendar
A long-distance move requires a lot more forward planning and there’s so much more to think about. Ideally, start your moving calendar 12-16 weeks before your move date to give you plenty of time to put everything in place. The longer the distance that you are moving, the more time you will need to plan, and don’t forget to factor in things such as border crossings as these add another layer of complexity.

  3. Take only what you need
Long-distance moves are going to be more costly, so slim down your personal possessions to ensure you are only taking what you need. Bulky items, such as furniture, are one of the most costly things to ship, so if possible have a house clearance sale to raise funds for new furniture when you reach your destination. While packing it’s a good idea to pack an essentials box that will travel with you so that if it takes a little longer for your main delivery to arrive you still have the essentials.

  4. Hire professional long distance movers
The easiest way to make a move long distance is to let the professionals take care of the entire process and hire professional long distance movers. It can be tempting to try and make the move yourselves in order to save a little bit of extra cash but this will require a lot more of your time and effort and it may be better for your sanity to leave it to the professionals. Shop around for a selection of quotes and read reviews of possible professional movers before making your decision.

  5. Decide how you will travel to your new home

Once everything is packed up and ready to go it’s time to decide how you will travel to your new home. Driving your own car is one option and will enable you to fit in some last-minute items but a long car journey may not be quite what you had in mind and if you have some serious distance to cover then you may be better off to ship your car and fly yourselves and your family to your new home.
