Are you gearing up for a first date with the woman of your dreams?

Not to stress you out even more, but first impressions matter. In fact, they matter a lot.

So if you’re serious about pursuing a relationship, you’ll want to put extra effort into that first date.

The following dating tips for men will help you to do just that.

  1. Avoid Weird Touching

The #MeToo movement has opened our collective eyes to the sexual abuse women face. So keep any touching at a bare minimum.

A handshake is the best place to begin. And then if the date goes well, then perhaps a side hug.

Of course, if she initiates a kiss at the end of the night (or before), then you have the green light.

If not, then keep it formal and respectful. You want her to feel safe and willing to see you again.

  1. Consider the Location

The ideal location will depend on a couple of factors.

If you know her or are able to do some research about her, then you can use that information to handpick a place she would like. For instance, if she loves France, take her to a quiet little French café.

But if you don’t have that luxury, then choose a neutral location.

While you may be tempted to make a first impression by wowing her with something like rock-climbing. But you really want to be able to sit, relax, and talk so you can get to know her.

Start with a public environment like a coffee shop so that she feels safe and able to engage in conversation. Then if things are going well, you can see where the evening takes you.

  1. Be Punctual

One of the most effective ways to put the kibosh on a good first impression is to show up late.

When you don’t bother showing up on time, you’re basically telling your date that she wasn’t enough of a priority to plan your day appropriately.

So plan to get there early.

Of course, there can be extenuating circumstances that could cause you to run late anyhow. If this happens, have the courtesy to call her to explain the situation.

Just texting her to tell her you’re running late isn’t going to fly. Chances are, she’ll see you as the sort of guy who has no issue blowing her off.

  1. Dress Well

How you look figures into making a first good impression. It shows her that you’re willing to make the extra effort to clean up and figure out what to wear.

You don’t have to be a fashion model on the runway. Or even on a magazine cover.

But take the time to shower, style your hair, and dress in a way that shows you care about your appearance.

A smile is also a great accessory. It’s disarming and will allow your date to feel safe and more willing to get to know you.

  1. Compliment Her

But don’t be overt or sappy.

If she’s wearing a nice sweater or you like her jewelry, for example, let her know.

You might think she has a warm smile. It’s okay to tell her that.

Complimenting her on the things you like about her shows her that you’re paying attention.

Be careful not to overdo it though. Too many compliments can feel ingenuine and make her feel there’s an ulterior motive.

No matter how much you may see yourself with this woman in the future, you don’t need to mention it just yet. That will come across as creepy.

Try not to get ahead of yourself.

  1. Keep Your Past Relationships in the Past

Just as you don’t want to talk about the future on that first date, you’ll also want to avoid any mention of your exes. Even if you mean it as a compliment.

For example, “That sweater brings out the pretty blue in your eyes,” is a nice compliment. But following it with, “My ex always thought she had pretty eyes, but yours are so much prettier,” is a turn-off.

Enter into this potential new relationship with a clean slate.

Remember, she probably has exes too. And do you really want to hear about them on your first date?

Probably not.

  1. Talk, Share, and LISTEN

When you first meet up, there will likely be some small talk.

But then make the effort to dig a little deeper so you can begin to make a real connection.

It’s a good idea to go into the date with at least some questions you want to ask her. By doing this, you’ll set the momentum and start the conversation flowing.

Watch for any reaction that shows she’s uncomfortable with a topic and be willing to back away from it.

And be sure to pay close attention to her answers. We can’t stress this enough.

One of the biggest complaints women have about men is that they feel they don’t listen. If you make a concerted effort to listen and are legitimately interested in what she has to say, it’s going to improve the likelihood of a second date.

Just keep the conversation natural and try not to force any topics on her that she isn’t comfortable with.

  1. Be Polite to Others

Obviously you want to be kind and generous toward your date.

But the way you treat others reveals a lot about you.

So if you’ve been told in the past that you’re impatient with waitstaff at a restaurant, for example, it’s time to take a look at this.

We’re not suggesting you pretend to be someone you’re not. Rather, take a look at what motivates that behavior and then practice kindness until it becomes habitual.

If your date notices you’re being kind to her, but then treating the guy who fills your water glasses like a moron, she’s likely to see that as a red flag.

  1. Stay in Touch

Finally, if the date goes well, then call or text the next day.

You don’t need to be a stalker about it. Keep it casual. If she had a good time too, she’ll be happy to see you again.

But playing the “Don’t call for at least two days game” is a serious drag. It just leaves women confused and angry. That’s not the ideal set up for getting a second date.
