10 Tried and Tested Makeup Tips That Work Every Time

By  |

There are so many trends in today’s world that it is hard to keep up with them. While techniques with makeup may change, it’s always great to stick with what works. If it isn’t broke, why fix it! Here are 10 of the best makeup tips that have been tried and tested. No matter what brands, formulas, or technologies come along, you can count on these tips when it comes to your DIY makeup routine.

Make It A Fresh Start

You should apply your makeup right after washing, exfoliating and moisturizing your face. The warm water, facial massage, and moisturizer will plump up lines, buff away dead skin and provide optimal hydration for your skin. Applying your makeup after washing your face will allow it to go on smoother and last longer.

Start With The Eyes

It’s just a smart way of working, as you will not have to worry about powder shadow falling on your cheeks, or under-eyeliner smears. These things will dirty up your foundation, blush or concealer and cause you to reapply them. Using a primer or cream eye shadow will allow your eye makeup to go on smoother and have a more even application.

Waterproof Eyeliner

Waterproof liners provide a firmer and more defined eye. They will glide on with ease and last all day. To apply, start by resting your elbow on the table to steady your hand. Look into the mirror, raise your chin and draw along the base of the upper lid.

Do this with a small back and forth movement. You will want to begin on the outer part of the eye and work inward. You should stop about three-quarters of the way in. Remember to get as close to the lash roots as possible to help fill gaps. The dense pigment is what will provide a strong border. Finish shaping the eye by lining the underside rim. You will want to use a light touch when applying liner under the eye.

Curl Your Eyelashes

Ladies, make an eyelash curler your best friend. You will want to invest in a quality curler, as they will not pinch, crimp or break lashes. Plus, this is something that is going to last you for years to come. It’s all about the shape, hinge, and padding when it comes to choosing a quality curler for your eyelashes. You will want to position the open curler and close slowly over the base of the lashes. Hold it for 30 seconds. You do not have to spend a fortune on mascara, as you need to toss it every three months for hygiene reasons. Apply your mascara beginning at the roots and making a zigzag wiggle motion as you work your way up. Place the heaviest concentration of the mascara at the base where lashes are the thickest.

Accent Your Eyes With Natural Shadow

If you have dark eyes you will want to go with warm tones, light eyes should stick with cool tones. You will not have to contour the whole eye. A pale, shimmer shadow on the lid can help make your eyes pop. Use a medium shade in the crease and just above it you can use a darker color to make eyes appear larger. Dark browns and charcoals can work as a smoky topcoat to hide any imperfections you made with your eyeliner.

Don’t Forget Your Eyebrows

You should always go the extra mile and treat your eyebrows. Take care to fill, extend and groom them, as they are a key to facial expressions. You will want to keep it natural. A short brow pencil will allow you to make feathery strokes, just remember to follow the direction of hair growth. Use powder to fill in sparse areas, as it will cling to the pencil base. You can use a clean mascara wand to blend.

Stop Trying To Cover Up and Go For A Healthy Glow

Your face makeup should help restore radiance to your skin. The goal is to make it look healthy. You can go one shade warmer to help counteract pasty and ashy skin. It will also help neutralize redness and rosacea. Go for a foundation that contains the word “luminous”. This type of product contains light-reflecting technology that will provide an incandescent glow for your complexion. Go for a dewy and sheer, but highly pigmented foundation. Forget about using matt, powder, high-definition, total coverage or long-lasting face products. Always go for luminous, as it will never let you down.

Quality Makeup Brushes

If you want your makeup to go on smoothly, then you need to invest in quality brushes. Aged skin contains textures with fine lines. It is recommended that you go for a brush set that is silky and synthetic. It will make your makeup look skin-authentic. Using a foundation brush will prevent the makeup from settling in crevices and corners. You will want to start at the center of your face and blend your foundation outward. Allow it to fade off towards the jaw and hairline for a seamless look. When using a foundation brush, you want to use a back-and-forth circular motion. Glide the brush over the nose and around the lips, ensuring you get all the creases smoothed out. Creases are the areas where makeup tends to settle. Use a concealer brush under the eyes and at the inner corner next to the nose to blend makeup evenly.

Blend Blush High On Cheekbones

If you want to add energy to your face, then you need to blend a natural-looking blush high on your cheekbones. This will pull attention to your eyes, and mask other trouble areas. Use a bright shade of pink, rose, apricot or red depending on your skin tone. There will be a lot of colors when you first apply, but it will fade as you blend it.

Fabulous Lips

An upper lip lift can turn back the hands of time, and restore a youthful, vibrant look to your lips. However, not all of us are up for a cosmetic procedure. There are some easy tricks you can do with your makeup to help your lips look more luscious. Always make sure that you choose a lip liner that matches your lip tone.

Start by sketching the border of your lips. Correct any faded, asymmetric or thinning upper-lip line by rounding the bow, rather than drawing it to a point. Be sure to fill the entire mouth with the liner, as it will act as a base and prevent a ring around your mouth. Go for a creamy lipstick, and avoid a gloss. Nude colors tend to be the best. Skip pale shades as you do not want to match your lip color or liner.
