5 Things Every Grown-Ass Adult Should Have

By  |

Adulthood can seem like a scary thing. Being on your own, working too much, grocery shopping, managing bills, and doing taxes…the list goes on. A lot of people think having a job and a place to live is enough to consider yourself an adult. But if you just have the basics, you are certainly not “adulting” correctly. In order to really consider yourself a competent, grown-ass adult, you will need a few crucial items.

So get out a pad and pen (things you should have stuffed in your desk drawer like an actual adult), and take notes on what all adults need.

Health Insurance

Whether through your employer or the state, you definitely need some form of healthcare. It’s juvenile to think you are a perfectly healthy 20-year-old so having health insurance isn’t necessary. Injury and illness can happen at any time—even if you seem okay now. So getting covered with short term health insurance or something similar is definitely the recommended “adult” thing to do. And another quintessential adult pastime: doing your research. Browse health insurance plans and compare quotes online to determine the appropriate plan for your needs and budget before signing up.

A Sophisticated Outfit

Say good-bye to your collection of hoodies, ripped jeans, and baseball caps. As an adult, you need an updated, classier wardrobe consisting of appropriate office and job interview attire, fancy dress, and a casual, comfortable set of clothes. INHABIT cashmere and other upscale fashion brands offer a range of affordable, sophisticated styles to choose from. As an adult, you want to look your best and make sure you have an outfit for every possible occasion—a birthday party, an important work meeting when you meet your in-laws, a friend’s wedding, and just going to the gym. No more saying you don’t have anything to wear!

Toolbox

Of course, you can call a repairman to fix a leaky faucet or clogged toilet, but it’s a good idea to be self-sufficient. Have a basic toolbox prepared at home complete with a screwdriver, hammer, nails, screws, glue gun, pliers, level, drill, measuring tape, spackle, solvents, and wire cutters. And make sure you know how to use these tools! Additionally, you should also have a few other household items like a plunger, stool, and ladder. Keeping these items handy might save you a call to your landlord or an expensive plumber’s fee.

A Calendar

Adult lives are busy lives. To help you keep track of all of your appointments, meetings, and daily activities, get yourself a calendar. As an adult, you need to establish a schedule and routine too so perhaps getting a planner to help organize your day is a wise choice. It doesn’t matter if your planner and calendar are paper or electronic, just as long as you’ve got something to help you stay organized.

An Emergency Kit And An Emergency Contact List

Prepare an emergency kit in case a disaster or power outage occurs. You should have a few flashlights, batteries, matches, enough water to last for three days, non-perishable food, a blanket, and a first aid kit. You should have one kit stored in your house and another in your car (in case something happens while you’re on the road).

Also make sure to have a list of important phone numbers to call, in case of an emergency. These include your local police precinct, nearest hospital, fire department, landlord, a handyman (like an electrician or plumber), and 24-hour veterinarian if you have a pet. You never know what might happen and you should always be prepared in case of an emergency so you aren’t left scrambling.
