CBD Oil For Cats: Things You Should Know

By  |

If you are an avid cat owner, nothing makes you happier than seeing your kitty healthy and happy. Just like dogs, cats are a part of the family, and just like humans, cats have emotions. Cat owners are starting to search for new alternative ways to keep their kitties emotionally and physically healthy. In this article, we’re going to cover some things you should know if you are planning on introducing your cat to CBD.

More and more people are turning to CBD as a natural alternative for a number of reasons, and research studies show the compound’s positive impact. However, there have been no formal scientific studies on the effects on pets.

What Is CBD Oil?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, a natural compound found in hemp plants. CBD has the ability to interact with our body to enhance several internal bodily functions. Since cats are mammals as well, CBD interacts with their bodies the same way it does with humans.

Is CBD Oil Safe for Cats?

Despite all this popularity, CBD is still new. As aforementioned, no current studies are supporting how CBD affects cats.  But, it is known that CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system to help improve physical and mental well-being, so if it’s safe for you, it should be safe for your kitties.

Currently, the FDA does not regulate CBD products, so consumers need to be extra sure of the oil’s potency and purity when introducing it to their cats. Unlike other new industries, the CBD market reaches new heights every year, so it’s only a matter of time before studies concerning CBD’s effects on pets get published. For now, keep your eyes and ears open and ask questions.

How Much CBD Oil Should I Give to My Cat?

CBD oil serving sizes vary based on your cat’s age. To be safe, start small, add a few drops (2 -3) (0.5ml – 1ml) under your cat’s tongue or between its cheeks once a day.

If it’s your first time giving your cat CBD oil, start with the weakest strength you can find (50-75mg). Try that for a couple of weeks while monitoring their reaction. Once you are sure that they can take it, you can begin to increase the number of servings per day.

Is CBD Oil Legal?

Unfortunately, this isn’t an open-ended question. Although CBD products work well for cats, there are still some concerns on legality. Let’s clarify; if a product contains less than 0.3 percent THC, it’s categorized as hemp,  which is legal under federal law. CBD oil fits this description, meaning hemp-derived CBD oil is legal. However, at the state level, CBD laws get a bit more complex. For a substance to be totally legal, the state laws surrounding that substance must match the federal law.

Sadly, that is not the case in many states. Although some states have made hemp-derived products legal, most are still hesitant. In an ideal world where hemp-derived products are legal nationwide, your veterinarian would be able to discuss this as an option for your cat, but since we’re years away from this world, veterinarians are staying away from any claims and recommending the compound to clients.

Are There Any Side Effects to It?

Good question! Just like with anything new, you should always consider the side effects. The most common effects are increased appetite. However, some pets can become sedated on CBD products, but that’s not really a negative outcome. CBD oil side effects are almost non-existent.

If you notice your cat reacting poorly to the compound, stop administering the oil, and talk to your veterinarian. It may be possible that an allergic reaction has occurred. The fact is that some cats are allergic to grass; therefore, they can be allergic to hemp. This is uncommon but possible.

Where Do I Get CBD Oil for My Cat?

Not all oils are formulated equally. As CBD companies and products crowd the market, it is necessary that consumers make an educated purchase for their cats. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the many players in the industry, but there are many untrustworthy companies out there.
