Red Diamonds: Here’s What You Need to Know

By  |

Diamonds come in various shapes and sizes. In terms of gems, the rare it is, the more expensive it becomes. The value of diamond rings is determined by multiple factors, including color, carat weight, and clarity.

Pure, high-quality diamonds are among the rarest gemstones available on the market today. With the increased demand for clear, pure diamonds, jewelry experts need to examine and label diamonds with absolute care. Diamonds are classified in different classes, with some being rarer than others. The red diamond is the rarest among other diamonds in the world.

What’s Red Diamond?

A red diamond is simply a diamond that comes with a red hue. It sounds obvious, right? But we’re not talking about artificial stones that jewelers color artificially with different shades.

Also, we are not referring to natural diamonds that aren’t purely red, where shades of purple, pink, and orange are shown within the red hue, resulting in a beautiful stone but with little value as a pure diamond.

It is easy to mistake a diamond with a pinkish or purplish tone for a pure red diamond. But a pure red diamond does not come with other color tones or specks.

What Causes the Red Color in Red Diamonds?

Despite investing many years in testing and investigating the red color in red diamonds, gemstone experts are yet to determine the cause.

But, it is believed that like other color diamonds, alternating and instability variables during the development of diamond could determine the color that a diamond inherits.

During the formation of diamond, there is a plastic deformation in the crystal lattice structure.  Some atoms are displaced when the diamond is moving up through the kimberlite deposit, and the intensity of these movements leads to varying shades of red or pink.

This explains the notion that red diamonds are, in fact very dark pink diamonds and why only a single color intensity is found. Gasses under the earth’s surface affect everything that develops beneath it.

The pressure exerted on the diamond ore during development under the earth’s surface and the cause of the pressure applied to them could impact on the diamond’s hue.

The Value of Red Diamonds

The major factor that determines the value of a red diamond is its purity. While read diamonds are rare, getting a pure red diamond is extremely rare. Most have other colors in their descriptions and others come with a “watered down” reddish tint and can’t be regarded as pure red diamonds.

Here are the properties that determine the value of a red diamond:

Color

The color of a red diamond is looked into two ways: the hue and saturation. A red diamond can come with secondary colors, like orange-red, brown-red, or even purple-red, but red should not modify any other diamond color.

A pure red diamond is the most valuable but rare to find. It will, therefore, fetch a higher carat price compared to a red diamond with a secondary hue.

Carat Weight

Red diamonds come in small sizes. The majority of them weigh less than one carat. Only five carats weigh more than 5 carats, with the largest weighing 5.11 carats.

Just like other diamonds, a red diamond is priced per carat. A large pure (100% red) diamond, will attract the highest price in the market

Clarity

Diamonds are examined to determine whether they have inclusions in the inside or on the outside. The clarity of a diamond has little impact on its price due to the rarity of the color. Red diamond buyers are more interested in red purity and the carat size when choosing a stone.

Can I Use Red Diamonds for Engagement Rings?

A red diamond can be used to make engagement rings. In fact, red diamonds are a nice twist to your next ring. Square cut, solitaire round and tri-stone princess cut diamond engagement rings are available in many jewelry stores in the US.

Celebrities are known to spot and buy unique and unusual jewelry, and most of them have worn the red engagement ring in the recent past.
