A physical characteristic noticeable in men once they reach puberty, find out what does the adam’s apple do and what is its primary function?
Did you know your face has at least 65 different characteristics that people subconsciously use to make their first impression of you?
Our faces aren’t the only things that are different from person to person. If you look at a group of people, you’ll find that no two of them will have quite the same Adam’s apple.
What does the Adam’s apple do? Why is it there? Why are some larger than others?
Read on to learn more.
What Is the Adam’s Apple?
The Adam’s apple is also known as the laryngeal prominence. It’s the protrusion found at the front of the human neck, right in the center.
It’s made up of cartilage which is a firm tissue that is softer and more flexible than bone. Cartilage is often found in the joints between bones, such as your knees and elbows. It’s also found in your ears and nose.
Why Is It Called the Adam’s Apple?
There are differing opinions as to why it has this name.
The most common theory is that is based on the story of Adam and Eve. When Eve gave Adam the fruit of the forbidden tree to eat, Adam ate some but it got stuck in his throat, becoming his Adam’s apple.
Linguists have other theories, however, including that the name is a mistranslation of a phrase meaning “a man’s swelling.”
What Does the Adam’s Apple Do?
The Adam’s apple itself doesn’t actually serve any individual function in the body.
The cartilage sits in front of the larynx, or voice box, so it’s purpose may be to offer some protection, but it doesn’t perform any bodily process of its own.
Why Are Some Bigger Than Others?
Men usually have much bigger Adam’s apples than women.
This is because as men hit puberty, the size of their larynx increases, leading to them having deeper voices. As the larynx grows, the Adam’s apple becomes more prominent.
Some women can develop prominent Adam’s apples too.
What Can I Do About It?
If you have a large Adam’s apple that makes you self-conscious, regardless of your gender, the good news is that there is something you can do about it.
A procedure called chondrolaryngoplasty can shave off some of the cartilage, reducing the prominence of the Adam’s apple. Since the Adam’s apple serves no real purpose, this type of treatment does not cause any real side effects.
The surgery is not overly invasive, and recovery usually only takes one or two weeks.
